Latham first round interview with the lead partner of the group I’m hoping to join. Any insight on what to expect? I’m expecting it to be pretty casual and fit based, but perhaps that’s incorrect?

You are probably right that is will be casual, but every interviewer is different. I would prepare in advance to talk about 1-your experience as it relates to this group, 2-three things about yourself that make you a particularly attractive candidate (through examples, not just saying them), 3-one problem you have overcome and how, 4-an answer to “tell me about yourself “. Once you have these committed to memory, you will find they come up in most interviews on different ways, and you will be ready to for most questions. Good luck!

From my experience, lateral interviews are less casual than oci interviews. Much more interested in tangible skills and responsibilities you've had/exhibited in your current role and how that fits into the needs of the group you're hoping to lateral into

Agree if you’re experienced hire. If first job out of uni than expect more of a grilling. Good luck

I took the role I am in about a year ago and it just has not been what was promised and a huge step back. I have found a good place and am content but not overly happy with my place in the company. A smaller competitor reached out for a vp position that is a huge step up responsibility wise. There would be a pay raise but not huge so money is not the motivator here. Is this crazy to seriously consider? I hate to burn bridges. I have been told I am on the partner fast track. Thoughts? Advice?

I’m a 5th yr considering lateraling from a V30 to a V100 to increase chances at partnership. The v100 makes a fair amount of partners in my practice and I would assess my chances at making equity partner there to be relatively good for BL. At the V30 equity partnership odds seem much lower, but my reviews have been good. The V30 has >$2mm per year higher PPP, higher chambers ranking and better exit ops generally.

Any advice as to how to decide on the offer? What else should I consider?

Partners/Associates. How does someone balance the fine line between sending follow up networking emails to people who did not respond to the first networking email (sent pre-pandemic)? Having targeted alumni of my schools, I know people are flooded with emails daily (especially partners) and it may have been poor timing as people are busy. I don’t want to become an annoyance, but I do want to try to connect with fellow alums (with hopes of a job at some point (more than 1 year from now)).

Do we just not go home until late? Will the expectation to be on 24 7 relax a bit?

Never Google “Supra or infra” again!

I admit, as a fifth year big law associate it has taken me way too long to find a good memory devise for whether Supra or infra means “see above” or “see below.” But I found it and now I’ll share it with my other Latin-vocabulary-challenged fishies.

“Supra” has the word “up” in it. As in: see up! Boom. Done. You’re welcome.

Another hours post — I’ve been so slow this year. I hate it. I’ve asked for work and pick up projects here and there but the group generally isn’t busy. I’m annualizing at around 1700. Last year I billed 2100. I’m concerned how this is going to impact my reviews. And in general just concerned about wasting a year not really learning much or being valuable. I actually prefer being busy and this is kind of torture. Might even start looking to lateral if things don’t pick up soon. Thoughts?

Anyone here deal with Phantom Share Agreements? Would that be in the wheelhouse for an ECVC lawyer? My BIL is being offered a job with a company and received a proposed phantom shares agreement. Hey all - first year associate here… I’ve met my hours requirement for this year (requirement is 1900 and am currently at around 2050 with billable hours - approx. 2160 with non billable admin hours) and I am just tired. Is it okay to just “disappear” during the holidays (thanksgiving week, week of Christmas) and let partners and senior associates know I am not available? At this point I don’t care about making more money - I just want to sleep, read a good trashy book, and cuddle with my dog.
