I think if I could change anything about my current role it'd be the ease of maintaining WLB (I know there's basically no way this is gonna happen). I like to be conscious of the fact that as a manager, I have the potential to be a roadblock in a lot of people's work and it's up to me to make sure things are moving along and everyone has what they need. Sometimes that requires more time and effort than most people give.
I’m a tech lead but also perform some Engineering Manager duties. I consciously make sure that I’m not in the critical path. I also ensure that the team around me are supported and encouraged to make decisions. I sometimes feed a fish to the man, but I prefer to help the man learn how to fish.
I enjoy being a lead, I enjoy that people recognise me for my skills and experience. I sometimes pick-up a small feature but I immediately regret it because the urge to refactor the whole damn thing is too great.
That last line! I feel that. As someone who feels like I'm fighting even to keep things 50/50 between IC and managing, the temptation to do it myself is probably my own worst enemy.
