Phone call and request month to month. They aren’t getting new tenants anytime soon.
Same here...problem is, my new apartment is already locked in, so double rent? 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah I already signed the new lease, starts in a few weeks...
It’s not about the drive, I would leverage your need to rent a truck, get movers, purchase any remaining moving materials, etc. That makes your argument based on exposure to the virus. See if your current place will add a month and if your new place will give you a month free. Are you in a hot spot part of the country? Regardless, it’s a smart move for both apartments buildings and I’d like to hope they would accommodate
On the same boat. Chicago —>NYC
I was in the same boat. They also pre-leased my apartment to someone else. Here is the email I wrote when they asked me to have to vacate - “We have a 5 month old baby and I’m unwilling to engage with livers in the middle of a quarantine.
If you are unwilling to cooperate then I would need to call the CDC and get further guidance.”
But wouldn't it be less risky to move during this quarantine since so few people will be out and about? I live in a hot spot but new place is like 40% cheaper than current place... lease is already signed, it's just an hour away, etc.
I have reusable masks so think I'll wear them, pre-pack everything for the movers, keep a 6+ foot distance away as they pack, and lysol everything down with when everything is moved?
I’m moving this weekend. You can pick up boxes and moving supplies from a variety of places right now (Home Depot, U Haul, storage facilities), but I don’t know if they will all be open next week. If you have a few movers, you can keep your distance with everything packed and stored....including mattress bags, rug covers). If you want to stay they are not allowed to evict during a national state of emergency. However, they can charge you for the additional days that you stay in the apartment without returning the keys. Like others have suggested, reach out to the apartments based on your preference. Many leasing offices are closed/not giving tours (DC area) so there is a limited number of renters moving.
Same boat, we are moving friday. 14 reported cases in this county. 970k people suburbia
In the same situation, moving this Sunday. I figure it’s better to move now than wait till things get worse!
