Hiring entire teams wouldn’t be preferable to most employers since that’d mean you’re trying to fit a whole different culture into your company’s. Assimilating individuals into a newer culture is much easier than trying to convince a whole team that they have to make changes to their way of doing things.
I think it's just not a common scenario thus why I ask. Usually you could get some trickle down from one person leaving and others following suite. As far as culture goes though a team build out that works well according to industry practice might actually help you spread better habits to others as well, really depends on the context.
I’ve heard of entire teams quitting within a short timeframe but not everybody being hired at a new company together
Saw this happen recently. There’s definitely a “great sort” happening in the tech world right now.
Oh definitely heard of MD bringing a whole team away to new employer
Yeah I guess this would be something that gets done on MD or equivalent senior level. Kind of cool if you can hire a team instead of just a single person. Pretty sure though we can't move internally or at least our MD would definitely want us on the same project 😄
There are definitely advantages to having an entire team show up on board. They've worked together before and so likely to be efficient off the get go. There's a reason acquihires happen.
But it's harder to find a "buyer" if you're not actually a team in a company with VC ties. VCs tend to do the matchmaking and deal making most of the time in those cases. I've thought of the same thing before in cases where the entire team was disgruntled with the company and would follow me to wherever new, but never made it happen, mostly because I had no idea where to start to find a hirer, but also the thought that the company would sue on grounds of non-compete violation.
Thanks for a very thoughtful answer. As far as non-compete agreements are concerned I think this would definitely be a no go to move as a team and something I need to check internally. In your case did you just end up moving on your own?
A company I was previously at had this happen. A group of four developers were hired at a new company and all resigned together. The joint resignation was a bit crappy in my opinion.
Well the company has the right to do layoffs at whatever count it deems necessary...so multiple people leaving would suck for whoever remains but unfortunately this is just how things work.
Yes. A group of three resigned and left for a competitor firm to stand up a growth market. They’re all doing quite well over there now.
I want to encourage you to go ahead and seek this out. There are so many pros to what you have in mind. Top of mind here would be the efficiency of on-boarding, settling in, getting up to speed and delivering. This will be greatly reduced if you can pull this off. I suggest putting a business case together to paint the picture for a potential new employer on the benefit of this. Far too many pros not to purse this. Good luck. Please update on your progress here. It will be helpful for everyone reading to expand their mind on the art of the possible. Best of luck
*pursue :-)
I have seen this with aqui-hires where a small startup gets bought more for the developer talent than the actual product. However, pouching an entire team from another company does happen, but it can be risky if non-compete clauses exist or if the employment agreement forbids active recruiting within a time period of leaving. If the entire team is going to be working on very similar projects with the new company, there might be grounds for the old company to sue the newer one for intellectual property theft.
Aren’t there laws against that, that would be poaching.
If there's anything, there'd be a non-solicit agreement, not a law. Usually applies to reaching out to people after you've left, rather than before, but depends on the agreement.
