don't overthink it. people move around all the time. you aren't the first one to jump to mbb and won't be the last. just tell them you are leaving, and tell them where you are going IF they ask. just thank them for the opportunities to work with them and learning you've gotten from them in the process. don't dance around the question about where you are heading - doing so makes you seem like someone who is overly sensitive and can't handle a semi-difficult question. it's really no big deal.

Old EYP Partner here. A few facts. 1) A significant number of us have switched firms at some point in our career and we like to remain friends w/ our old firms - I moved from MBB to EYP years ago. 2) If you have a relationship maintain it! Part of maintaining a relationship is honesty. 3) People leave all the time. They leave for MBB, they leave for PE, they leave for corporate, non profits, and on and on. It is not a big deal. 4) I am always sad when someone on my team leaves for a competitor but that is on ME not you. I failed in creating a compelling value proposition for you. I had this conversation w/ someone who I have worked w/ for years on Tuesday. They are off to Bain. Am I saddened? Yes. Do I think they made the "right decision"? No. But, I asked them what led to that decision, noted that they were joining an incredible team, and offered to connect them w/ some folks in the office they are joining as I think they are a quality person. Then I wished them luck - not to much luck though! I have worked, ate, drank, and yucked it up with this person for several years. I am betting we have a lot more years in front of us. Decent chance we work together again in some capacity. Our whole professional life is centered around building and sustaining relationships. Just a bump in the road. Next round of drinks is definitely on them though...

This one is probably a dead link but... Here, at EYP, they are part of building a highly successful unit of specialists. Odds are they will be the "next generation" of leadership in their specialty. I also think we will eclipse Bain over the next few years as I believe the totality of our value proposition, coupled with our balance sheet, will allow us to build out a bigger and better machine. They would be a leader in that effort. At Bain they get an insane brand and a highly tuned commercial diligence team - arguably the best out there (I have to argue the point, I am the competition). And this person brings some real special skills that Bain needs to compete effectively. But, the infrastructure and the leadership is in place. Bain is looking (from my perspective at least) for people to plug in and manage the incredible business they have. I am looking for people to help build the incredible business we will have (pretty good right not in all fairness though). I find our value proposition to be more compelling. But, not everyone does! Let's also be clear, there is no 'bad decision' here - this person is going to be just fine.

Does your partner know you exist?

It would be funny if you’re going to the same MBB he’s from!

Oh man, EY-P is really hemorrhaging their most competent people to MBB

like

Yes. Moving to a competitor does not necessarily severe all ties that you've nurtured so far. In our small professional circles some relationships will stay on. All the best for your new adventures!

I CC’d mine in the email I sent to HR and my manager about my notice. Then had a 1:1 with my partner to keep the network. She asked where I was going and I said I wasn’t comfortable sharing atm

Hmm I see. I told people, including partners, verbally when I left Deloitte a couple months ago but put N/A on the written separation form. It was a required field so I couldn’t keep it blank. But then they made em update it - apparently accounting firm / audit conflict of interest reasons.

OP:: which EY-P sub-practice were you part of? S&T? I'm just trying guage which MBB practice has better alignment??

Don’t you have them in your Rolodex? If not it should be somewhere in the microfiche library.

EYP generally doesn’t do same say departure under the director level, I also don’t see any upside in concealing where an individual is going even if it is to a competitor. Congrats on the new opportunity!

I don’t see a situation where you wouldn’t get paid — great way to open yourself up to a lawsuit

Be prepared for same day departure from EYP once you announce

They might force you to leave the same day as your announcement since you are leaving to a competitor. Partner may also be forced to tell HR on your behalf

Just tell them. Don’t be a kid who can’t handle a difficult conversation... we’re adults here... mercenaries, even.

OP - I have DM'ed you

What was your rank and competency?

Let us know what you did!

When I left another strategy group for BCG, I didn’t tell HR or my career advisor where I was going. I only told the 1-2 partners I felt very comfortable with, and I knew they wouldn’t say anything. If you trust them, go for it. If you aren’t sure they wouldn’t tell others, keep it to yourself and tell them on your last day. You can keep it vague and say you’re “evaluating a few offers.”

Who knows. I’m not familiar with audits. Deloitte forced me to do it. At PWC/s&, it was in my offer letter.

Useless comment here, but what is a "main partner"? Maybe it's because I'm still only ~1 year in, but I've worked with a bunch of different partners (rarely the same one twice) and more than half probably don't remember my name...

Right. He would be supporting my promotion. I’ve worked on a couple projects with him and know him the best. If any partner would “miss me”, it would be this one.

I’d probably tell my main 1-2 partners before I tell HR. Even if it’s same day and a few hours before you officially tender your resignation, I feel like it’s a good step to preserve the relationship and network. Congrats on the offer and the new opportunity!

If you have a good relationship tell them. Be transparent. They will understand; the world is too small

Is just call him. Nothing to overthink. Congrats on the offer!

Received MBB offer, which I’m very grateful for. I have a medical degree with some work experience. I want to stay in healthcare. I like pharma/biotech, provider systems but also early stage healthcare investing. Certainly open to consulting long term. Few Qs: is the promotion pipeline any different for advanced degree folks? What sort of exit opps would be available to someone like me post MBB? Would my skill set/knowledge base be uniquely sought after, or not really? Thank you for your help!

60M people need to be vaccinated. Offering them $1000 each would cost this country $60B. Realistically, you can get to half of that population — $30B. One booster shot for 250M people at 80% uptake — $200B. For $30B - $230B, we can end the pandemic in the USA. Worth it? Edited: add in $5M for an MBB to do this math and put it in a PPT for you. And $50M for a big 4 firm to implement, botch, reimplement.
