Just be smart and you will be fine, don’t go drinking @ night. Don’t walk around flashing your tech like any other city.
We are talking Europe, Vienna, Prague, etc! Come on, please don’t overreact and give people a scare. From my experience, i visited Vienna and New York multiple times, there are more scary areas in New York than in Vienna (or Prague for that matter)
What people? 🤣 I was born in Eastern Europe and feel safer walking the streets there than in Chicago. No difference than travelling anywhere else - be smart, watch your drinks, don’t go anywhere alone with strangers from a bar, watch for pickpocketing and scams.
P.S. These type of questions always remind me of a college friend who took 3 years off to travel the world covering 80 some countries , and right when he came back to the States, at a gas station in TX a stranger ( a fellow American) threatened him with a knife and tried to force him into his truck. The irony.
It's completely fine, I've been to all of these solo multiple times and lived in Budapest for a while. Nothing scary about any of them, I used to take long walks at night (alone) in all three
I suggest you start hanging out with smarter and more open minded people. Geez....
These cities as perfectly safe, you don’t have anything to worry about! Going out at night is perfectly fine as well as long as you are not wasted and can still get back to your hotel obviously lol. But walking at night in the center of any European capital is really common for Europeans, at no point will you be alone in the streets (even at night). Source - I’m from this part of Europe and I feel safer in Europe than in a lot of US cities
Thanks ey1 for the reassurance
You're fine - was there last year! Be smart, don't be reckless, and you'll be fine. Have a great time!
Lol! Seriously, you really give bad reputation to American tourists!
You'll be fine. I've been to Syria, Iraq, Palestine. 😅
Oh wow! Solo?
I studied abroad in Prague and ventured out solo all the time. You'll be fine. It's beautiful and if you just take precautions you'd take in any major us city, you'll be fine.
Old Soviet region is a little bit further East 😃. You are travelling to the European Union countries, you will be absolutely fine
Depends on what is meant by “Soviet region”. If it’s the Soviet bloc, Czechoslovakia and Hungary were definitely a part of that. Budapest actually has the museum of terror (or something like that, big black building) that covers the Soviet regime there.
Then again, I feel more nervous travelling in the US, than in Eastern Europe.
Sounds like a great trip!! You’ll be totally fine. I’ve been there alone a couple times (I’m a woman) - including solo when I was 16 on a train trip around Europe. Main thing is getting a bit lonely if you’re traveling alone but hostels are the way to go if you have that or organized trips eg walking tour of Prague where you have some other people to interact with for a bit. Have a great trip :)
Also as others said, “Eastern Europe” starts further to the east. This is Central Europe. Eastern is more like Poland / Romania / Bulgaria / Ukraine (I’ve been to all those too and it was fine....)
Thank you all it’s very helpful
This post made my day. The ignorance of some Americans in this day and age is incredible. Unless you’re genuinely worried because you won’t be able to buy a gun..
Vienna, Prague, Budapest - and most other European countries - are nothing like Chicago!
It‘s not about your ethical origin, so I do not care if someone was born in India, Chicago or whatever. But I seriously wonder where thoughts like yours are coming from?!
Why would anyone think that it is not safe to travel solo to European countries like the ones you are traveling to? I am really interested to understand how such a thought develops.
Thank you all for your reassurance! Made it to Prague, leaving for vienna tomorrow!
