Leaving insurance company. $1M GDC and going indie. I'm paranoid about downloading client data including all the planning I've done over past decade. Any insights or best practices? Am I too paranoid?

To you, they are your clients. To the company, they are theirs. Be smart.

When I left the bank my broker dealer warned me that they would pull video of me leaving the bank for the last two months and search the computer for downloads of customer files... so be smart... handwritten is good.. your commission statements are yours... then advertise heavily the day you leave... I put up 12 billboards the Sat after I left letting customers know where I was... several right around my old office

Printing data ok? Screen shots from snipping tool of our CRM?

like

OP, nope. No printing. They can see records of what went through the network to the printers. I've seen it happen before where people get busted because they printed lists. You can do that on the Indy side, but not the bank/wirehouse/insurance side. You'll fry.

I shouldn't download to external hard drive? Ahhhh! That'll take forever to write it all down!

like

Take pictures of your computer screen with your cell phone/tablet. DO NOT email them to yourself, store them on Google, Dropbox, etc. Just the pic, stored locally. Delete as soon as no longer needed.

Make sure your clients have your cell number...

I did the same thing. Write it all down.

In addition to monitoring anything you might have printed using company machines, If they sue you, you’ll have to turnover all your personal computers/devices for discovery. Pain in the ass and will cost you money. Which insurance company? Do they have a history of suing advisors? Most insurance co’s want out of the bd business and just want you to keep writing insurance biz with them. They might not be as harsh as you’re thinking. That said, assume the worst.

People - type it all into an Excel file on your personal laptop...and hopefully you don't type with two fingers. You may be able to get away with copying and pasting onto a thumb drive excelfile. Unplug your machine so it's not connected to landline/wifi. These companies are really not as sophisticated as you all paranoid people think. You may be able to synch all your contacts to Outlook and then save the file to a thumb drive - download to your personal computer - upload to Outlook. Encrypt the file, they won't know how to open it. I wouldn't worry this much, it's not like you are working at CIA...

Depending on the Co. Larger wire houses have software programs called sniffer software that track and analyze your key strokes... it's similar to Amazon, they know you're going before you do!

Fellow Auditors, Since we all are aware that there has been a sudden pay rise of 20-30% in recent past (6M - 12M) specially for experienced staff to Manager level due to acute shortage of resources at ground level. Hence, I sometimes wonder as to who has borne all this extra cost so far. Is it the Equity Partners or the Client 🤔 In case Partners, than I really think that even though current hot market might have boon for the most but absolutely nightmare for the Partners group.
