Leaving my law firm on Friday.
Any ideas for what to get for the following people?
1. Partner I work with on pretty much everything (we’re quite close- he swears a lot and is a great mentor)
2. Two paralegals (not on the best terms but we are cordial)
3. Partner I work with sometimes (very nice guy)
4. Associate I barely know
Should I just get a gift for the partner 1 and lump in all the other people by getting the law firm a gift basket? Any recommendations for gift baskets?

(1st yr & poor)

Got the office cookies when I left my temporary gig. I don’t think I needed to, but I was grateful for the opportunity to work there. I don’t think you need to do much more than that. (Maybe a card for the people you like)

At most, since Partner 1 is a great mentor, if he imbibes, get him a small bottle of his favorite drink (whether a bottle of wine, a 375mL of his favorite liquor, or a six pack of his favorite beer). That’s more a mentee to mentor gift than a departing employee gift, so no one should be expecting they also get something. I lateraled as a 4th year and no one received anything from me.

This. I just left my firm last month, didn’t get anyone anything except a bottle of wine for the partner I owe all of my growth to.

I would send a handwritten card to the ones that help you and maybe send a gift basket of candies or cookies or something for the entire office. I would not get individual gifts.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

A senior has just delegated a non-urgent monthly billing workstream to me (on a matter I was tangentially involved in). It’s about 5 hours of work a month but the problem is he harasses me incessantly for updates and seems to expect it to take priority over closings for partners etc. Is there a polite way to manage his expectations?

How important is firm culture/WLB vs practice area? I’m a first year associate working for a firm I summered for. It’s a boutique tax firm with some civil litigation. I love the lit work (have always wanted to do litigation) but I truly hate the tax and corporate work.
The WLB is really good though. My boss is generally pretty flexible with my hours, and understanding with family responsibilities (I’m a mom). I have a 1500 billable req and I work very well with my boss.
