Sigh. Always make sure your visa transfer is confirmed before putting in the papers at your existing job.
Re: next steps, not much you can do. You could try to sue, but that’s going to need a lot of your money and time, but the reward could be worth it. Would consult a lawyer.
Speak to a lawyer to see if there are serious grounds to sue. If so, call back the employer and explain that you will sue if that's where it gets to but that you want to keep it amicable and you're still very much wanting to work there if they are willing to make it work. Not the best of starts but you need the visa more than settlement money.
Otherwise if Bain will take you back that's also a good option before jumping into recruiting (maybe after a while...). Would try to connect with your highest relationship there and have them support you through the transition.
Another option I haven’t seen mentioned is to find a lawyer to write a strongly written letter and look for some sort of cash “settlement”. Decent chance the company would just cough up some money to have you go away and helps offset your lost income while continuing your job search.
I definitely wouldn’t want to work there at this point though, even if they agreed to bring you on... sounds like a shitty employer. Would be nice to drag some money out of them though.

Life lessons. A job isn’t real until you have a signed, non-contingent offer letter.

You can still sue, talk to a lawyer. You quit to join them and they reneged for no real reason
That’s horrible and unacceptable. Would definitely look into what rights you have and if you have grounds for action.
If you’re on good terms with Bain, would also pass along the intel to whoever so they can blacklist the company for future alum exits.
You’ll definitely find a new job and get back on your feet!!!
Do people normally leave their jobs before the new job is actually final? A visa seems like something that you would absolutely want to wait to clear before you quit...
Is it a TN or an OPT?
Switch to McKinsey if you are good no one is going to care about this BS . Be honest and upfront
You should have no issues going back to Bain or any other competitor firm. It’s just difficult that your 60 day period is during the holidays and a pandemic. I’d say, get back in touch with your old team if you left on good terms
Focus on landing the next job first. Try to sue them/shame them after that.
Happy to refer. We are ramping up experienced hiring, at least in my office (NYC)
What practice
Don’t have any advice, but thinking of you, OP!
Do you have the option to go back to Bain?
Could be promissory estoppel, but employment is at will in most of the US so I don’t think you have any grounds to stand on. It’s not uncommon to have offers withdrawn, sadly.
Well a bainie never lets another bainie fail so you should be good yo
Dm me for EY referral. Would love to help
Sorry to hear this OP. This must be very difficult for you. Can you log into the Bain Alumni job board and check out any new opps there?
DM me , maybe we can find a job for you :)
DM for EY referrals
Or a EYP referral
Please make that company public so that we all know which ones to stay away from
Never resign before H1B transfer is approved. You don't have many options, try the Global Immigration bowl for some advice. Your only true option is to get back into recruitment or you'll have to move to B2 visa after your 60 days grace expires.
Happy to refer you at PwC and help out by connecting with the recruiter/hiring manager directly if you are interested.
