Left my old firm on good terms but as time has passed and with therapy have realized how toxic it was. Just read that they were disqualified from a big case they were probably very excited to get due to a conflict of interest issue. Trying not to feel too much schadenfreude. That’s all.

Exploring another opportunity and need some advices. How do you like being a technical writer and how’s the pay in general and workload/stress?

Recently joined a consulting firm and have a corporate AmEx now. I am planning on paying the $95 fee to get the points from corporate expenses. I also have only a chase sapphire preferred. Is it worth picking up a Gold or Platinum card to pool all the points in one place? I eat out a lot and mostly redeem points for statement credit or the occasiaonl hotel room (use Marriott). I’ve surpassed my billable target by 200 hours already and I am one of the highest billers (firm is transparent with associate hours). Ive been saying no to all new work—currently staffed on 5 active deals. Two of my deals just went pencils down and the other 3 just signed/filed so I’ll have several quiet weeks before mid December. Am I justified in continuing to say no despite likely billing less than 10 hrs a week or should I take on more work to fill my next several weeks?

How do I deal with a passive aggressive senior associate who really wants to make partner but creates arbitrary deadlines and fires where there are none?

Any advice on a partner that is plain mean (cold, curt, & non responsive)? I’m told she likes me—hate to see how she treats associates she dislikes—but still have trouble not taking it personally.

What do you do to get yourself comfortable saying something doesn’t exist in an agreement or in case law? When i get questions like this (Ex. Does this contract have XYZ-type language?) I usually figure out the answer pretty quickly…but then I spend a ton of time trying to prove myself wrong. I got burned on a question like this as a 2nd yr, so I think I’m just hyper aware of the risk. I’ve been told I need to get “more efficient” though, so I’m trying to work on this. Any suggestions?

I’m in the process of transferring my UBE score and, months after i submitted my app, the new state bar followed up to request that I pull and provide my credit report. I didn’t get any requests like this for my first jurisdiction...is this normal?

Can anyone recommend good language to add to a resume that highlights hands on case management? I’ve got 2yrs experience doing ID, so I’ve actively managed my own case load, taken and defended depos, minor mediations, minor court hearings. I draft all of my own motions (no substantive motion practice or trial exp though). Managing partner usually covers the more difficult oral arguments, mediations, expert depos, etc.

I’ve been a staff attorney at a state-level appellate court for 11 years now. I draft opinions all day long, every day. It’s been an ideal job in a lot of ways (flexible hours when my kids were young, etc), but I’m starting to feel the itch to do something different (and to make more $!). Suggestions on practice areas that would find my skill set valuable? Suggestions on how to find out what market rate would be for salary for an 13-year attorney that has only worked within the court system?

What do you do when a partner emails and takes you off an assignment, citing your lack of communication about the assignment, in an email thread that doesn’t include your most recent email update about the assignment? Especially when it’s not yet due? I think the email chain suggests the partner missed my most recent email; if so, whatever—it happens. However, was I out of line by defending myself with my omitted email attached to the assignment so it could be handed off?

Joined a new firm with 25 attorneys. Third day and nobody has introduced themselves or said hi. Is this a red flag?

I’m a first year in NYC biglaw who’s about to try lateraling to a similar firm in NYC. Unfortunately I just didn’t get my stuff together and am only applying to the NY bar now. If I’m not admitted yet, will that be a problem when I try to lateral? Is it better to wait until my application is in to start applying?
