Legal Department Rankings

As counsel roles become more prevalent, I think more transparency and rankings (similar to biglaw) would be helpful. For example, I’m seeing comp all over the place and it doesn’t always make sense.

What are some thoughts on how to rank legal depts? What would be the metrics?

Here are some thoughts on metrics: compensation, culture, retention, promotion frequency, outside counsel use

Tbh I don’t think comp is all over the place. The salary guides capture it pretty accurately with FAANG and jobs in SF being the outliers. What is all over the place are the people in this bowl advising 3rd years on salary expectations that are more accurate for 10+ years experience

This is a tough one given the variability by industry, company revenue, public versus private organizations, and team size. That said, I think if you could collect industry, comp, promotion frequency, company revenue, and metropolitan area, you could arrive at some useable data.

Department rankings mean little when roles are highly varied between jobs even within a dept.

Legal Department Rankings would be great!

The big except is that no one publishes their salary data (Am law firms generally promote their salary info to attract highly recruitable law school candidates). Also, legal departments can vary from a single attorney to several hundred or thousand. Legal department size can even vary substantially between similar revenue companies depending on willingness to accept risk, outside counsel use, vendor use, amount of litigation, etc.

Beyond that companies generally do not have public bios on their site for their legal team (that's how data is gathered for attorney retention, and promotion for law firms). LinkedIn could potentially be used but not every in-house counsel has a bio, the info like title and dates are self reported which comes with bias and inaccuracies.

I have insight from negotiating salaries and seeing client budgets but that's still a massive subset of the market. Once pay transparency laws become more prevalent that could be useful in at least the compensation side but it might not include equity value.

My advice right now for candidates and friends is if you're concerned with comp seek info on Glassdoor, Fishbowl and other resources. The best bet for retention and promotion is to research the company employees (past and present) on LinkedIn. The rest like culture, outside counsel use, hours expectations, etc. you're stuck relying on truthful answers during interviews.

It’s been over a year since I’ve been employed at my company and I want to speak to my manager about getting a raise. What should I say / how should I say it and approach the conversation? I have talking points about accomplishments and list of other tasks I’ve taken on outside of my job scope. I also received a job offer that is higher paying and I essentially want my employer to match/exceed it as I do enjoy working at my company and hate to leave. Any advice/suggestions?
