Legal Recruiter contacts you via firm email with information re: what seems like great lateral opportunities. Have never submitted my resume to the recruiting firm. Worth looking into?

I’ve received so many calls and emails from recruiters (at least twice a day) and they are all the same. They describe a job opportunity that appears to be a utopia with lots of money, lower billable requirements, collegiality, family focused, partner track, accelerated experience, etc. But when they get you on the phone they tell you some bs about how that unicorn firm already filled their need, but here’s 5 other sweatshops you could apply to. I’ve only had one experience where a recruiter left me a voicemail and laid out my entire work history, my degrees and the schools I received them from, among other things. That recruiter actually googled me. Blew my mind because most recruiters can’t even remember your name when they are talking to you. If you are looking to make a move, ask trusted colleagues for recommendations on who to use. Chances are they know someone.

I’d talk to them first before sending in your resume. Also keep in mind, from experience, I’ve had people tell me that they contacted me as part of targeted search where the firm looked at each candidate they contacted, only that wasn’t true.

I remember receiving those emails when I was practicing. I transitioned into Attorney recruiting just over two years ago (and still hold an active Texas license) , so I have the benefit of seeing both sides. We have the potential to be very helpful to candidates, but you will definitely want to vet the recruiter to ensure they will be a good career partner for you, i.e. are they local to the firm in question, just a headhunter looking at online postings across the country or do they actually have strong law firm contacts at the caliber of firms in which you are interested, are you comfortable they won't share any of your identifying information/resume without your express permission, are they too persuasive or "salesy", etc. A good, professional and experienced should be a trusted partner and advocate, not a car dealer.
