Hey OP don't be discouraged. In the words of JP compare yourself to who you were yesterday not who someone else is today. Sometimes its easy to overlook the progress one makes. For perspective, I started college mid twenties, graduated late twenties and are only now starting to work on building wealth. When I look at peers my age they are 4-5 years ahead of me. However, Instead I look back at how far I've come and it has been quite the achievement :).

like

For first 3+ years out of college, I was making less than $70k annually, but I was loving the work and developing my skills. I then switched into consulting where I went to $95k, started dating my now fiancé, and life was great until the pandemic. Now I was fortunate enough to find my exit out of consulting where I’m making $150k and we own a home together now. Don’t work to make money - work to enjoy what you do while living your best life, and the money will come.

Big yikes, why didn’t you work at your parents firm when you were younger?

25, 62K, 3 YOE... I often feel discouraged when I see some posts of 21/22 years olds making 100K +. I appreciate this sobering post, OP.

@Consultant 1 Take care of that back! People often slack on the core exercises, stretches, etc. after they start feeling good again (hopefully you *are* feeling good again and the surgery went great). Unfortunately I’ve got a horrible back situation, and long story short, I’m not a good candidate for any existing solutions. My hope is that *someone* comes up with new innovations to treat back issues, lord knows it is a gigantic market. Either way, best of luck!

I was 25 with $67.5k salary and -$120k net worth. Now I have paid off all my debt and got a new job. Salary TC $165k, net worth $130k. I’m 28 now. You can do it. (I moved back in with my parents after grad school to tackle my grad school debt)

like

So it’s TC, yearly stock bonus is $25k and then performance based bonus is $15k this first year. Salary is $125k but I included the afore bonuses because these are given each year and are the baseline (Covid year so everyone got the same). I found a group within consulting I really enjoyed working with, learned a lot and then exited to the strategy arm of one of my previous clients. They’re a bunch of ex consultants so they appreciate the consulting experience even though it was 2.5 years.

You’re in great shape. I probably had the same numbers at 25. Now 30, income 225k, net worth 500k.

It’s interesting to see all of these individuals hating on your net worth. If you had to pay over $100k for university by yourself and also deal with the other nuances of life by yourself, you’re doing great!

At 25 I was making $72k and net worth was also negative. Now I’m 27 and make $150k and my net worth is nearly at break even (student loans). It gets better, sometimes way fast than you ever thought

You might have a little resentment now, but TRUST ME. Later in life you’ll look back and be so glad you got to spend this time with your parents, many people don’t have the privilege. Even better when you have kids you’ll have free baby sitting and let me tell you this is no small deal haha

So you're working as a hobby until then?

Close to neutral net worth at 25 implies you’re making progress towards saved/built enough equity to offset student loans. Good job! If you can keep to your proven good fiscal decision making then you have a strong outlook. I know it’s not easy, but you are in a better situation than most.

SAP1, it's been a whirlwind, but here are the high level details: At 25, I was in professional services at a tech company. Probably underpaid tbh 27-29, I did big 4 while getting an MBA part time. I had zero life but it really fast tracked my career. I also switched tech platforms to something brand new in my space that I knew was going to be big, as the tech had just been acquired by a big player in my space. At 29 I started doing contract work, which I have since turned into an S Corp with multiple clients at once. My biggest differentiator is that I can communicate complex tech and business problems on a succinct yet accurate manner. It's been a combination of hard work, smart work, and luck that my space blew up. My amount of success isn't realistic for everyone, but 200k is very obtainable for anyone that takes the steps I did.
