Let’s say you don’t end up as CFO for fortune 100 company but make it to Director/Senior Director, the career earnings of Partner still beat the Director/Senior Director over the lifetime till retirement at 60 right?

Or am I missing the boat and those RSU’s add up at the director/sr. Director level? I just feel like most salaries in finance/accounting cap out at like 200-250k base which if compared to the partner, they could be bringing in close to $1M in VHCOL like Bay Area no?

Curious to know the point in making that much - and if you do make it to that level why wait til 60 to retire?

like

100% with you, it’s going to deter greatly depending on the individual but hypothetically if I did ever make that much, I would be finding ways to retire much earlier than 60.

Average B4 partner comp is over 1M, don’t need to be Bay Area.

Equity depends on when you get in and success of the company. If you’re early stage tech or pharma, there’s 8 figure upside but also potential for 0 value.

PA is stress. I have heard of stories of partners dying or having heart attacks .Industry is always better imo

like

My uncle had a heart attack and ran a firm 👀

Let’s assume that you are pushing strictly for comp and no weighing to WLB.

It’s also way more difficult to become a partner than to become a director level in accounting/finance. And I would say it’s more like 250-300 now for someone with 15 yrs of quality experience

Maybe I am a little jaded by all of the promos that happen out here in the Bay Area where even partners hit promo faster than what’s probably the norm. Good point tho.

I know a tax director at a public company that made 2.5M last year. Idk how much of it was equity based versus true salary.

If you are just chasing money, likely you won't be happy. PA is very tough - constantly selling work and appeasing clients. No thank you. I'd much rather work in an industry job that calls to fewer people.

Good point.

You are correct, strictly looking at comp. Stress/hours are typically a lot lower in industry, though.

Purely for comp, stick it out till partner. But WLB? Industry is the play.

To answer your question, yes. Career earnings for a big 4 partner will be greater than a Director or Sr. Director, but a more fair comparison is VP/SVP. The discrepancy is much less but I still expect a partner to be greater.

Her explanation: 1) you either do a good job or you don’t 2) I’m not doing better than anyone else on the team. Everyone on my team is amazing, so no matter how hard we all work, we still get rated as average. I feel like this is partly because being rated above average means you can ask for a raise.

I've just recently been hired as an assistant manager at a Canadian outlet store. It's a small company in comparison to others, but there are over 10 locations spanning western Canada and NW united states. I'm curious as to what others in a similar position are getting as salary. I was offered $42k plus bonuses at the interview, but when called back I was offered $44.5k plus bonuses. I already accepted. Did I leave money on the table here?

Do you think our clients are aware of how little we train new associates and laterals? I can’t imagine they would be happy if they did. I also wonder whether it’s as bad compared to other industries as it seems. Taking a new role in industry after 2 years in public. It’s about a 70% increase from current salary and between 25-30% increase from expected salary after promotion to Senior (find out later today what my new figure would have been).
