In 2012 I was a bank teller in CA making $12/hr with no hope for promotion because of all my “write-ups”. After working there for 2 years a friend referred me to an insurance broker would pay me $15/hr to do certificates. It was an easy decision.

like

Yeah when I want into banking I was switching careers from real estate. The economy was still recovering and nobody wanted anyone without experience so $12 was the best I could get.

I was working with a recruiter who specialized in finance and had one Underwriting Assistant role to fill since they had a friend at the company but did not normally recruit insurance roles. It worked out well because I was also in finance by accident and didn’t want to do that or know what I wanted. I was thrilled to get the salaried UA position after having two jobs out of college that were office but hourly only. Job market was very competitive in 2013 and I didn’t land that salaried job till 2015! Been in it ever since because relative job security and decent middle class income. I ended up being really good at it. I can’t say I love it but I know it’s my forever career and I appreciate being gainfully employed. My dream out of college was to work in politics/non-profit and I can’t imagine doing that now! So that didn’t work out for a reason (after multiple internships in those fields)!

like

UA1 by the time I had that role for 6-8mo, I was ready for the UW position. I trained intensely with a wonderful UW I asked to mentor me. If you do this, and you are not promoted internally within 1.5 - 2yr mark, apply elsewhere! My first company led me along for SO long because I was naive and had me doing the UW role for almost 2 years before promoting me or paying me for it. Don’t be taken advantage of. They will lie and say you need more experience. It’s not true - right after I was promoted they hired a college grad with 0 experience for the same role. Second thing is, move companies every 2-3yrs. Loyal UWs are punished with stagnant wages.
Wish someone had told me this my first year as a UA. My mentor and I were both blindly loyal at last job and suffered and wow have we thrived since leaving.

Looking at all the comments it’s crazy! I haven’t seen one person say it’s something they willingly chose to do or have always wanted to do.

Client Service Specialist - I definitely agree with you. And tbh that seems to be the issue that I have with trying to move on from insurance.

I see the lives of many individuals who work in insurance and it looks pretty good.

Also a lot of insurance jobs are transferable to jobs on the corporate side of banks and various other firms

Desperate times called for desperate measures. I had just graduated college and needed to find something quick that would allow me the freedom of moving out of my mom’s house.

Working on getting out of the rabbit hole though. Insurance (Claims) is terrible.

like

Seems like there are a lot of incoming phone calls though, correct me if I’m wrong.

One thing I absolutely despise about claims: constant incoming phone calls. I would prefer to just go about my day without having to speak to anyone unless a meeting is scheduled 😂

It was honestly by accident. I applied to the job not having a license or anything. I didn’t even know it was an insurance job; i just saw the hourly rate and was happy with it. Long story short they called me back and i began the interview process and was offered the job. They assisted with getting me licensed.

I needed an internship and $11/hr sounded great at the time. Been in it ever since

It was way back in 2008, got introduced to the role of process associate and thus began my journey towards being a Underwriter.

I just kind of fell into insurance. I needed a job, a couple of local companies were hiring. I accepted the offer on hopes that it would be temporary steady work until I found something else but 12 years later I'm still at it!

I went to college and ended up majoring in Insurance after they had dropped the program I originally intended to go for. Ended up interning for a few carriers while still in school and decided to make it a full time career after graduation!

I was desperate for a 9-5 and I found a company that was a telesales insurance company. Colonial penn and they forced me to get my life and annuity license. I hated the job but loved the hours.. Didnt do so great cold calling so I was let go and found a job at StateFarm. I was forced to get my P&C license and Accident and Health license. The rest is history, over 12 years experience. Property and Casualty is my favorite and I am going to be starting a new role as a complex claims examiner in a few short weeks

Mail room, scanning mail and then distributing correspondences via email at a brokerage… fast forward 5 years and I’m now marketing deals. Funny where life takes you.

I got sucked into Primerica fresh out of college cause i needed a job. Didn’t make one red cent. Years later i needed to leave my federal job and got into surveillance. It was a pay cut but i needed an out. I eventually moved into claims and now I’m hybrid working some surveillance and some claims investigations. Now if i can figure out how to move this into compliance/regulatory I’ll be happy

I started my career in insurance back in 2011 tracking & maintaining hazard insurance on mortgages. I’ve been stuck ever since! I’ve done everything from claims customer service to claims adjusting to training and development to commercial flood compliance. I love it!

I kind of just fell into it recently (4 years ago) and I love it!

It was 2018. I was 25. Had an apartment in an downtown that was a dream come true. Then I was laid off from the credit union. I moved back home and was in a dark place mentally. Much of my family worked at the local insurance company in my city. Decided to apply and give it a shot. I got hired in the call center for the life insurance area for about 40k a year. I’ve been with the company almost 4 years, moved on to our retirement division, and am no longer in a call center! In fact, I was just promoted! That call center job helped me grow so much as a person and as an employee.

like

Thanks so much! I hope you are thriving Ahmaud! I forgot to add one final development… the job I have now is full time remote. So I decided to make a dream come true and moved by the ocean :) I am so happy. And it all started by cutting my teeth in the call center. I’m proud to have come from those beginnings.

Honestly by accident. I've only been at it for three months. I saw a posting for a WFH job with Progressive and threw my name in the hat. I am definitely finding it to be very stressful and draining, but I'm going to do what I can to stick it out.

I was tired of unloading trucks and cleaning toilets working retail, saw an opening for claims with Progressive and got lucky enough to have a hiring manager that took a chance on me.

I got a referral and was in need of a job, had bills to pay!

That’s exactly how it started with me. I was laid off, had to move back home with my mom at age 25, and needed a job bad. Started in the call center and 4 years later, am about to officially become a client service manager :)

I interviewed for an insurance internship while in college and landed the role on the spot. The company guaranteed a job for me when I graduated, which I accepted, and I’ve been with them since.

In college I got a job at State Farm as a PT CCC Sales Rep(Jake). They licensed me and introduced me to insurance and from there I did claims before leaving to get into commercial insurance and underwriting at travelers.

like

I'm also curious about the commercial underwriting phase. I'm curious what day to day life looks like. Is it really spending all day googling companies?

Quoting policies for agents in a call center! My mom worked there so that is why I applied.

Are roles in large established FMCG (Unilever, P&G, Mondelez etc) still a good training ground for people early in their careers?

I ask as I'm looking for my next career move. However my friend has mentioned that a lot of them have frequent restructuring as they follow the zero-based budgeting methodology in a time when they are pretty mature.

Was wondering if any fishbowlers have insight or work in large FMCG, who could shed some light.

I am 23 YO, just graduated undergrad from a non-target school, and am currently working in tech consulting for a B4 firm. My long term goal is to land a technology operations job with a large PE fund.

What steps should I be taking now to make this goal more feasible? What types of exposure should I be looking to gain?

Also, I wouldn’t mind going back to b school if that’s what it will take to get in the door.

Thanks in advance!
