Nightmare: financial services due to the toxic culture/environment
Hard agree, working in a hedge fund right now and it is ROUGH
Not industry-specific, but startups can be a huge challenge to work for. They're looking to cut corners wherever they can (understandably so), but it often means one HR rep dealing with an ever-increasing amount of work.
I work for a startup now and this is spot on. Still deciding if it’s the right environment for me after only a year. It’s really not for everyone.
Love aviation! It’s like a big huge family!
Nightmare: Restaurant Industry. In my experience, the culture clashes with everything HR-related.
Favorite: Consulting, Least favortie: Healthcare
Currently in healthcare. Slow moving and way behind the times with culture and pay
Nightmare HR industry: Commercial construction. Profit margins are razor thin so all overhead depts are run lean. This should mean you get a wide breadth of experience, but HR and L&D programs offered are limited with a high volume of employees. So there's a ton of work to do, but it's all repetitive and it's hard to build skills and your career. Plus, civil and structural engineers are known as "engineers' engineers". They're really numbers focused and it's hard to get them to tap into their humanities side.
Favorite industry: Don't have one yet, but I'm hoping to make the leap into life sciences and see how that goes
I work in staffing. I have worked HR in both the Pharma/Clinical Research staffing industry and now IT staffing. Fast pace, tons to learn, lots of turnover. But I will say the Pharma industry is such a headache! So many client requirements, so much new hire onboarding and audits! Fortunate enough to not yet have found my "nightmare" industry.
FAVORITE: Companies that provide services or in Tech (More open minded)
NIGHTMARE: Financial companies
My worst experience was in education. It was so toxic, mostly due to a very entitled board. They would use the cliché “we’re family” while talking about staff behind their backs and saying that underpaid staff weren’t worth a raise. But they constantly increased their own salaries to high 6 figures while they had employees who were living below the poverty line.
I’ve really enjoyed working in start ups. I love creating a department from scratch with a blank slate. I also tend to get bored easily and start ups are always changing and keep things exciting.
