It depends on the product and what I find useful rather than creepy. Do you a particular scenario in mind ? I have worked on personalization features for B2B software products. Most of knowledge on B2C personalization is from the customer’s point of view.

Example.. I signed up to get a box of clothing once a month. The majority of the website contains personalized features. I have a “closet” page with an inventory of all my purchases and the ability to re-order my favorite website. I get invited (email) to visit the website and vote “like” vs “don’t like” to help the stylist selecting my clothing understand me better.

That's an awesome example, thanks! And agree, context is everything, so I'll give you a bit more context!

I work for a health tech company looking to invest in personalizations on our ecommerce site (we sell diagnostic tools DTC) and a majority of our data will be user attested for the first 6-9 months (maybe more). It's trickier in healthcare, I acknowledge, but our users are really truly more consumers than they are "patients" -- i.e., they are the ones initiating purchase and interested in taking control of their health, bypassing the traditional healthcare provider "prescription" or ordering procedure (because healthcare is messy and expensive and confusing, and many don't have insurance anyhow).

I like it when the brand remembers me and suggests complementary items, either that are trending or that are suited to the very specific kind of thing I got, or even moreso to the STYLE of item I like. When it gets that sophisticated I am really impressed and a return customer.

For me it depends on the type of products being sold. For example, there's relatively few instances where it feels relevant to me as a consumer to know what people in my area are buying but I do often add items to my cart from the 'people who bought this also bought...' type suggestions.

SPM your healthcare website story does resonate deeply with me. My mother was in and out of hospital 9 times in 6 months before I took more control. I did purchase several things off company websites so that mom did not need to return to the hosptial. She wanted to die at home, but was not ready to enter hospice even though she qualified.

Trending in you area would come across as creepy.. especially since it is healthcare.

I agree that doing “market basket” recommendations is a helpful idea. If you like X, you may want to look at Y. You don’t need a data science engineer, but you need an engineer who is analytical and wants to learn. There are tons of open source code for building this type of model. Or if you only have a small number of products, you could manually build a model.

If the product will need to be reordered, making an easy way to sign up for repeating orders is awesome. In other words they sign up for subscription, until they cancel.

Amazon makes it easy to see what was ordered in the past and reorder from here. This is the “closet” personalization.

If your healthcare product is purchase once, then the “person like me” tool to help select the right product is more useful.

Really sorry to hear about your mother. Stories like these are what make me motivated to change the healthcare game for so many!

Agreed to what you're saying about people nearby. Do you think if there were an intake process or preferences asked for that you would be open to answering questions to get the help / products or info you need? (From your experience personally!)

Do this for a living. Would be happy to chat if a salespersons perspective is relevant.

The "you might also like" feature is helpful, maybe even based on their job title. I feel like "people in your area" might be pushing the line in anything related to healthcare. that's a tough one.

Hands down, anything that makes me feel it remembers me. I also would branch out to say that with advertisements I really enjoy having more personalization. The downside is that if I have an embarrassing search history for even just a day, I don't want anyone looking over my shoulder when ads pop up...

I have worked directly for a personalization for 2 years. Happy to chat.

Adding, I no longer work for the company and can give an unbiased view of the space in general.
