Third year here who does not want to be a partner. I don’t have a fully baked plan, but my ideas are:
-Hang on as long as I can and get to a point where I can run deals; fortunate to be in a good group now where this is possible
-Lateral if necessary for longer runway or if current group goes downhill; if this move happens I will look for a group that has a wide practice so more possibilities for spinning my experience in in-house interviews
-As a fifth(ish) year, begin applying to in-house jobs — will cast a wide net
-Hopefully timing all this to have first kid while in biglaw for the generous leave rather than as a new in-house employee
You may also want to look at international financial institutions (depending on where you live - IMF, IFC, EIB, EBRD etc.)
They usually offer crazy good perks and very interesting exit options, including public service.
