Like most tech companies, about a year ago my company started hiring remote employees. we all worked remotely for 24 months.

Now that we are reopening our offices, no one seems to be coming into the office yet. I really do not want to work remotely anymore, and I’m seriously considering changing jobs just to go back to a workplace where people are in person.

Is anybody else in this position? I feel like I am losing my mind working from home for two years with no end in sight.

I'm sorry this is your experience, but also want to point out that WFH has been incredibly helpful for so many, including myself. If you prefer to be in an office, I encourage you to look for a new position and open this one for someone who needs the WFH capability. It's hard to find roles which are fully remote!

likehelpful

Sorry you feel this way and suggest that you find a different job

WFH has been a godsend for and is the only way I can balance a full-time job and being a mom of two small kids. I’d probably change jobs if they ever made me go back to the office more than once a month.

Have an 8 week old and I couldnt imagine going in regularly. It would be asking a lot of my wife

I felt very similar. I moved to NYC and started a job at a company with a strong in-office culture. Now I go in about 2 days/week which I’m realizing is actually enough for me but it really sustains me to get that human interaction. Some folks on my team are remote but other local folks come in similar days (usually Tues/Thurs) so we can often meet in person. I have observed that most of the folks coming in are younger (20s), childless, etc, and I can imagine that at some point I might prefer to go fully remote, but for now I’m very happy to see my colleagues in the office! It feels great to leave my apartment, go out for lunch, go out for happy hour etc. I have heard that our Bay Area office has much lower attendance though, I imagine people tend to have longer commutes.

likehelpful

My speculation is that unless employees are mandated, they will not voluntary go into the office. So unless your company is enforcing people to come into the office, you won't see anyone in the office. If this in person interaction is important to you, I suggest you find a new opportunity that has in person requirement. I have been remote since I started 15 months ago and haven't set my foot in my new office yet. I met some co workers for lunch/dinner once and that was it.

like

No offense but I can’t imagine a state of mind where I’d rather go into an office than stay home. My commute is over an hour each way. I work in saas and no one really comes into the office still besides one or two people who both live alone with no kids/animals and are local

Start small, maybe ask which people on your team would be up for an in-person brainstorming/whiteboarding session at the office, followed by lunch or happy hour. It might take some folks a while to get used to in-person interaction again, and you might see gradually more and more people returning to the office on a regular basis. But if that doesn't happen, I recommend looking for jobs at companies that are enforcing a hybrid and/or full-time office-based schedule.

It’s about autonomy over our lives. Offer people flexibility but manage your own expectations because just like pre pandemic, our day to day needs and experiences aren’t the same. It’s just changed. Find ways that work for you and if that means a new company then make the leap!

Different strokes for different folks. I love WFH—no more wearing slacks and holding in farts!

likefunny

I sympathize. One day/wk seeing teammates would be enough for me. But hard to get even that, so far.
I don't see the old world coming back, and on the whole I love WFH. But I'd like to have some in person time too.

So sorry, maybe look for another job.

Personally I love work from home and never want to go into an office again

Work from home got real old real fast for me. Especially as a product manager. You need to build relationships with so many people throughout the company it’s challenging doing that remotely.

I left 2 jobs because people did not want to come to the office. Finally found a great new place where employees have to come in twice a week. I think there are intangible things that are lost working remotely.

Are they several amazing things about WFH, yes. But I feel there is something that can’t be replaced by working in person as a team. I know I’m not in the majority with that point of view. Hybrid has been amazing.

like

I'm in the office twice a week but only see a handful of colleagues when I go in. I miss being there all the time, but do see the benefits a hybrid worklife. If there was no one coming in, I'd probably start looking for a new job too.

Looking to leave my current role, in industry (engineering/manufacturing) and to get back into big 4 (same firm as well), however I have a 3 month holiday planned from December next year.

Are big 4 pretty lenient on allowing holidays of that length? Especially for boomerangs? Or is it better to come back after the holiday and try then? Thinking that contracting temporarily might be the way to go in the interim.

Which company would you join?

I currently work in Sales with the intention of moving over to marketing in the near future. I received two offers for BDR/SDR roles from
Sprout Social and Gong. Both salaries are around the same (Gong - base 63k + anticipated $25k in commission, Sprout - 55k base + anticipated $25k in commission).

I like both companies’ software and it extremely hard to decide which position will get me into marketing faster as it is not a traditional BDR path to take.
