Limited at my current firm due not having CPA. I want to take a few months off to take the exams and then re-enter the market seeking a manager role ( 6 years experience) at a mid to larger size firm. Does this sound like a good idea or should I find a manager role at a smaller firm that doesn't require CPA? Any other options I should be considering?

take a sabbatical?

Clawed back at KPMG if it’s within a year of leaving

I know someone in tax at my firm who took 3 months unpaid leave to study for the exam. If you like your firm and will be promoted with a CPA, I would talk to HR about an unpaid leave/sabbatical

Philly. Leadership will generally support you if the other option is losing you.

Could you go on reduced schedule instead? Then you won’t have gap in employment

like

Yes solely focus on the CPA

Are you in audit or tax ?

Agreed. I did two months unpaid between jobs to finish my last two part when I was a senior

how many hours do you work?

wow, that is a lot.

Op which sub group in tax? There are some groups and firms which will promote you or hire you as manager with just EA( enrolled Agent) which is way easier than CPA. One of my friend got manager role at BDO in international tax and They only have EA. Even at KPMG the GMS group will promote you with just EA. It’s good to have CPA but I would not spend few months if you are getting a license only to get promoted.
Check if it is an eligible certification at your firm, with your friends at other firms, and then go from there. I knew someone who could not pass CPA exam and passed EA sections with just weekend study.

Yea I'm a manager in PCS tax. Got promoted to manager at EY with an EA and left to midsize firm and they had no problem with me just having an EA.
