Litigation associates— 4th to 6th years— is it billable to review emails? Obviously We have to review emails to know what is going on but sometimes there isn’t an obvious purpose for why we had to review it and sometimes there is no need to respond either. Asking 4th to 6th years because I have a feeling how billable some things are depends on how senior you are and the more senior you are the less billable certain things are. Enlighten me!!

Of course you bill! Anything for the client is billable, generally speaking. You’re not giving your time away!

Top SDRs oftentimes don't sound like traditional salespeople when cold calling. They use a very casual voice tone.

Here are a few tips:

1. Avoid upward inflections at the end of sentences. This makes it sound like everything you ask is a question
2. Slow down and eliminate buzzwords. Speaking fast makes you sound nervous and less confident
3. Avoid reading from a script - internalize your message and put it into your own works so you sound like YOU!

Thoughts? What are your top tips?

PA local income tax question: wife and I moved so she has two separate W2s bc of local tax. On one of them, medicare wages is blank. Local tax agency refuses to refund $800 bc of this. They are unable to point to regulations that say this. All taxes have obviously been paid correctly. Any tips on what to do? Wife’s employer will likely not reissue W2s bc they are a very large company.

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

Does the average Big Law associate have their own office, shared workspace, or some sort of cube?

I just realized that I am very depressed/anxious from being in Big Law (crying randomly, wake up multiple times at night thinking of work, things that used to make me happy don’t any more, I just want to sit and do nothing). I’m just a first year and have lots of law school loans. I’m starting to worry about if my mental health is starting to affect my physical health. Should I stay in BL or leave? Would honestly appreciate any advice…

I just discovered that Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a game that enchanted me for weeks on end when I was a kid, is ~25mb in size. I honestly can’t believe it—I’ve filed docs in court that are bigger than that. Also, this has nothing to do with biglaw other than that learning how to use emulators is what I’m doing during the tech slowdown. Just beat the Deku Tree!

4th year here. Just got the bonus. Now I finally have enough to pay off my student loan (~$110k) with what I have in my non-retirement account. It is a relief but I still feel like I'm behind. Started with $230K student loans and now NW is around $150K.

My fear is seniors and partners thinking I’m not reliable or that bright.
