My firm at the time was drowning in work during the entire pandemic. We never got any relief from the amount of cases we had. I actually appreciated the remote hearings for routine state court stuff so I could deal with all my other work instead of travel, but it was a bummer to have federal court of appeals hearings via zoom instead of in person. In my office I think there was only one associate who didn’t come close to meeting his hours, but that was not for lack of work. He just wouldn’t do the work we assigned to him.
We have a seemingly endless stream of work and any issues with hours seem to stem from failure to adapt to an increase in case volume and increasing inefficiency as the strain causes cracks in the system. Attorneys are hitting hours but cases have slowed down and associates have had to take on far more administrative tasks as staff is either beyond capacity or checked out.
The increased industry turnover and lateraling has let attorneys and teams become siloed and develop inconsistent workflow and file management, which makes big picture case management and evaluation more challenging. Partners are very busy managing clients or involved in high level matters and don’t seem to notice things until they look at the numbers which don’t provide context.
A modest investment in either time or additional management or administrative personnel or software would yield dividends for the firm and the partners, but everyone is either collectively too busy billing or putting out fires, or is mailing it in as they plan to lateral again
