300k is certainly possible, but on the very very high side with equity appreciation. 200-250 is top end for entry-SWE in top tech. Within 4-5 years if you’re halfway decent 400-600K tc is well within reach. But yes, most people have no clue how high SWE jobs pay (mostly in the Bay Area) at top tech companies. This is a pretty recent trend though (last 10-15 years) where top talent is valuable and hard to come by…hence the giant increase in pay for good ICs. When I was in school, CS was for stinky nerds and/or foreigners. Econ/biz is for cool ppl. But now CS is cool. I don’t know.

the understanding of tech and SWE in this thread is wildly inaccurate. No one is making L5/ senior software engineering by doing whatever the PM or manager tells them to do. FAANG isn’t paying that much for code kiddies

There are definitely kids a few years out of college making $1 million/year right now from their stocks that they were granted when they were 22 and out of college. Roblox, doordash, affirm, Airbnb, snowflake, Instacart to name just a few such examples . I know people who are out of college who started out at 200K but because of stock appreciation their equity is now 500-1million per year. Roblox especially. I can’t even fathom how much they have gained from their ipo People saying 300K is the “high end” don’t really understand just how much money you can make if your stock pops

Nontarget 300k at 22? You're misrepresenting or leaving out a key detail.

@deloitte1 Good synopsis of comp. Would also note that things have gone a bit mad these last 1.5 years post-initial COVID where even 3-4 YOE is getting 400-600 in some cases.

So silly. Everyone in consulting salivates at the prospect of tech roles and half of us wish we did SWE in undergrad. Also your parents must be proud - well done, brothers!

Of course I’m talking TC. Have you ever heard of an investment banker talk about their salary just based on their base (90k)? Same idea in tech, RSU’s make up over half of the TC. And you can just sell it all as soon as it vests to turn it into cash

300k sure

like

@mckinsey1 At lower-levels <4 YOE, tech typically does pay somewhat more base, especially compared to big4. Agree with you that base maxes out though for higher levels most comp is in equity.

As a Swe, I’d believe 300k TC, but unless your brother is working for two sigma/citadel as a quant, no way that’s 300k base

Yeah, it includes equity and bonus

I’m going back to FAANG, consulting is very low pay and no opportunities for advancement. New comp is 500k TC vs the 250k TC today

Hello Deloitte PPMD 🐠, I spoke to a D PPMD recruiter recently for possible opps with D. I was told that most of the people at this level will come in as MD, with a possible path to Partnership. Was told that comp is the same.. MDs at D are different then other B4s and they are compensated differently the other B4 and can make $1M or more. Does this sound right to you? I am 25 yoe, at svp level, over 500k tc. Should I even explore an MD role at D? My Preference is for Partnership track. Thanks.
