Live in ATX where the real estate is grossly overvalued. My current & prior rental are awful - bugs, leaky roof, mice - but affordable. I've given up on the idea of home ownership bc most homes in the neighborhood I need are easily +$950k & I can't swing a jumbo loan down pmt. I've been trying to keep rent at $3k so I could save, but at that price, the homes SUCK. I can afford $4k. Am I crazy to give up that savings to live someplace I can feel at home? (More below)

You definitely shouldn't be living in a place with pests and neglected maintenance. But $4k a month for rent is way too much. There has so be more options; renting in a different neighborhood, finding a roommate, purchasing a house in a different area.

You should spend some time evaluating your needs vs. wants and really dive into what you're willing to give up and what is non-negotiable.

like

I should have said:

The non-negotiable is the neighborhood because I have a special needs kid who needs to stay at his school.

The only family support is in Austin, so leaving the area means leaving grandparents who can provide care, but aren't always comfortable driving in city traffic

Income: $180k

You would think there'd be more options, but in the zip code I'm looking in, there are 19 homes available under $5k, almost half of which get tossed immediately for having no garage and/or not enough space for a home office.

The homes with rents in the $2800-$3k range are for properties that are comparable to what I'm currently in - much older and dated; I've lived in the area for years and have toured most the properties on the market. What's available are true rent houses that get turned over as quickly as possible, which to me signals I'd likely find myself in a similar situation as now.

At $3500 there are two properties available that are nicer, but their location is on the outside edge of the zip code and so in one instance the property backs up to a heavily wooded area, whch makes me worry about critters; and, the other is in a very hilly area that has caution signs all around so that doesn't put me at ease either. For the most part, prices jump to $5k+ after that. The house that I found doesn't necessarily tick all the boxes (no yard); and, it's a row house so doesn't feel super private either.

I found a place & it's closer to my kid's school and extra curricular activities. Home is about 4 years old, so I don't have the same worries about a bunch of stuff being broken. Bad financial move or worth the peace of mind? Just me (mom) and my kid so the stress of ongoing pests (was actually stung by a scorpion in my bed a few weeks ago!) and now mold just wears on me. We've moved twice this past school year. Talk me into or out of pursuing this rental.

My husband, who had a successful career but is not yet 40, wants to retire and look after our kids while actively investing our money. I enjoy consulting and will gladly keep working. We also have a good amount of savings, mostly fueled by our frugality during his peak earning years. I feel like I need to support my husband’s dreams while negotiating clear terms. Has anybody been down a similar path and have advice?

Hi! I’m a young professional with less than 2 years experience, started a new job 1.5 months ago. I’m having quite some difficulties on balancing out my response time to tasks. While I act incredibly fast if not immediately with some, I sometimes take 1-2 weeks with couple of hours worthy ones. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?

The skills & academic stamina of students in adv. classes are the lowest my colleagues and I have ever seen across ALL subjects. Students also seem not to care about the quality of their work, goal setting, & improvement like they did pre-C-19. Being back in person for a year has not erased the learning losses; in fact, this group is worse off than last year’s classes. Do you see this trend in your advanced programs? I wonder if it’s a district curriculum & philosophy issue or more widespread.

Hi guys, I’m debating switching careers. I’m currently a mortgage loan officer but I’m very interested in SE. My degree is in finance. There’s a coding bootcamp near me called Boca Code that’s supposed to be top notch. I’m curious for feedback on 1. Are coding bootcamps actually a way into the industry like they’re marketed? And 2. What is a realistic starting salary for entry level SE? I’ve read and been told 90k, but that seems high.

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Need advice. Have some credit card debt that I’ve been working to pay off. Have made progress but want to lower it quickly. We have dual income, with a house (~$300k in equity), 1 kid and 1 on the way. I’ve looked into debt consolidation via HELOC but also have ~$80k in vested equity in my company that I haven’t touched. Get equity refreshes every year. Would it be smarter to cash out $15k-$20k of that to pay debt vs. a HELOC at ~5% given that will still require mthly payments

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!
