Live in the bay area and have a net worth of ~600K. This does include our house and 401K's. Both my partner and I are in our early 30's and I am unsure if we are making enough that it makes sense to live here. Our combined HHI is only ~260k. We both do not have any RSUs.

Anyone in a similar situation and addressing the issue of potentially moving to somewhere more affordable like Texas? Feel like I am not keeping up with the pace of career progression and net worth in the bay area.

Do you like living where you do? Are you able to keep up with your expenses while saving? Are you going to be able to afford having kids if you want them? If so, I don’t know if you need to move. I wouldn’t peg the decision on whether you’re keeping up with others. It should be about you and your partner and your quality of life. I’d say having a house with a mortgage of only $500k left is doing pretty well by Bay Area standards.

Does it make sense for anyone to live in the Bay Area?

My HHI is $850k. Pretty happy here.

$600 NW with a HHI of $260k excluding 401k and house…. SK you have $600k in investments? Sounds like you have a decent savings mentality.

like

No that is including the house and 401K. Our net savings is only around 100K.

I was in the same boat but now changed jobs from consulting to industry and got RSUs. You can do the same!

We moved for this reason, and I think it's a good one. Around the same income, NW, and age as you, and moved from SD to Phoenix due to cost of living, and we are very happy we did. Happy to chat if you want - just DM me.

Not bay area (San Diego), but no. Was already primarily remote when I moved in 2019.

Only 260k? What are you spending all your money on?

We have been earning a HHI over 200k for the last four years or so.

We had to use a large chunk of our savings to pay the down payment on our house of ~100k.

I have been doing the 2k to 3k investment per month now in a combination of spy, fb, google, apple, and voog.

Apart from this there have been some bullet payments that we have done towards our mortgage.

When you say HHi is that what you save in a year? Then that’s not bad for early 30s. And considering you’ve already paid off half your mortgage at 30s is a big achievement

HHI doesn’t mean how much you save - it’s household income

I’m planning on getting my real estate license this spring! My biggest hesitation is that I currently live downtown Chicago and do not own a car. I really do not want to buy or lease a car as the area I live in requires a garage spot to park. Is it realistic to believe that I can be a real estate agent in Chicago if I rely on Uber/CTA?!
