Lol. So many 2pm calls are being taken from the playground. That’s taking the WFH perks a little too far isn’t it.

Let’s not forget the consulting “Perks” of working nights and weekends. Taking your full 5-7+ week vacation is never really an option either, projects would be a risk (at least at my firm). Even a week PTO and projects call daily. It’s summer, schools are out, many daycares and camps are operating on half day schedules, getting a sitter to accommodate odd hours is difficult. It’s hard for people to ‘win’ in this society, it’s a constant battle between choosing to be a parent vs work around the clock. I don’t even have kids and I feel for them.

like

That's the good part of working on deals (CDDs)... they're all so short, when you take PTO you can really relax since you're not on a project

I see this as leadership modeling healthy behavior to the organization. As a manager, I am very vocal with my direct reports about me not answering emails on weekends or bringing my work laptop on vacation or stepping outside to take a call while walking. I do this so they believe me when I tell them they can and should do the same for their own balance, long-term well-being, and sustainable productivity. They’re showing you that being a human with a life and caring about your work are not mutually exclusive.

To clarify, I DO step outside to take calls while walking! Can’t edit the message for grammatical correctness now

Yes. It’s annoying af that more senior leaders aren’t held to the same wfh standards honestly. I don’t care if you have children, I’m being chained to my laptop for over 14 hours and you’re sending out direction changes every couple hours.

It’s not easy to be a consulting partner. I like to see this kind of use as time, because it makes me hope I’m working towards some semblance of work life balance eventually.

I have a senior manager who takes frequent breaks while tending to his kids. But never has he ever let any item skip off his plate. He is always on top of everything. It’s how well you can manage the wfh situation. It can be a boon to many especially the ones with kids.

like

If the person is productive on the call and isn't letting things fall off their plate, what's the problem?

likeuplifting

That is caused by me being on a phone call while my wife and I watch them play? And/or while their nanny is there with them? Ok sure 👌🏽

like

First. Wait until you have kids. Second, you’re a BA, put in your dues then you can have different responsibilities as well.

Interesting perspective. I once had a colleague who refused to work past 5pm. She just didn’t do work after that time, as she was paid for her time and she wouldn’t do extra. She was a rock star during those 8 hrs a day. No kids. So I had to work until 9pm most nights during that period. Was the work not evenly distributed or did one of us set better boundaries, thus having a better balance? I think it’s all about which side you are on and your perspective. I learned a lot from her and eventually stopped working those late nights. Both of us have had really good paths upward.

I take some calls at my kids swim school, as long as I’m not presenting. I just listen and problem solve

Even when I was travelling, I used to take calls when driving up to the airport on Thursdays, or in between personal appointments on Fridays, so I don't see the big deal. Context is obviously key. If you're chairing a Steering Committee, it's obviously better to be at your desk rather than walking outside, but for calls where you expect minimal interaction, it's perfectly fine to me to not be in front of the computer.

I was a senior associate and I’d take calls all over the place. It’s not restricted

like

Nope. As long as the job is getting done. I forgot to mute myself while taking a leak the other day, oh well. You expect me to work every waking minute you will get what you get

like

Aren’t they on the call? What is the problem. A slide in my view keeps me from sharing knowledge?

like

What I don't get is why they don't decline the call and actually enjoy the time at the playground. Teams are usually better off when not bothered by their manager in my experience. Win-win.

Because it’s an easy checkbox to bill the time. The alternative is making up the time later.

like

I take calls while cooking sometimes because my calls tend to go till late. And as long as it’s not a screen share, it has never caused me any issue. P.S.: I do not have kids. I am just using that time to cook for myself while I can talk over phone.

I don't get the issue

The strongest opinions seem to be coming from people who can work from home and may just have to deal with some

Looking for advice. I’m currently interviewing for a position that pays $20k more than I make now. It seems like the job would not be giving me much for my portfolio and may have some work/life balance issues (but tbh what agency doesn’t). I’ve got piles of student loan debt. I’m only in year 2 of my career. Do I take this job for a year, deal with the downsides, pay off a huge chunk of my debt, then get back to fun stuff? Or will it hurt my career to have a portfolio gap?
