London 🐠, have you faced bias due to ethnicity / national origin / your accent…seems like cultural diversity is at the face of the city but firm cultures beneath it all seem to be quite murky.

Look at the results from the Labour Force Survey conducted by the ONS. There is an overwhelming amount of data to back up that the answer is a resounding yes.

I have had blatant discrimination and also been told of comments made behind my back.

As I keep moving onwards and upwards, one of my missions in my career is to ensure there are fewer obstacles for marginalised employees in the future. Kind of a 'leave the place better than you found it' mentality.

I have been in the UK for 10 years. Heavy accent. There have been a couple of people that have not liked me but it was personal rather than racism. On the contrary, I have been promoted faster and got paid more than my British counterparts, in most companies I have worked at.

Having said that, I will echo what was mentioned above about the 40yo partner rooting for the 20yo that he sees himself into. I have found it difficult to find common points with most people I work with. While they had their mom and dad bankroll part of their house, I had to do it myself. So, less disposable income to go golfing, skiing etc. The time will come for those too but not yet. There is a time lag. In the meantime, work hard and be indispensable. Most people don’t care about your accent or skin colour.

Yes. I’m a born and bred Londoner, and did not experience discrimination growing up. The workplace, however, has been something else..

The workplace is not the London I know

like

Not professionally. I’d say there’s an implicit disadvantage in having only a state school education and working class background. But race has not had a bearing on my success.

If you progress at the expected annual rate through the grades, and are consistently told that you're producing great work as you do, and that work is materially in evidence through sales figures and other objective metrics...

Yes - no one would ever admit it, that’s suicide, but you can notice it by seeing the difference in opportunities / promotions/ projects people get

like

D3 welcome to intersectionality. Some people are at a disadvantage due to their gender, race, age, sexuality, class AND whether or not they have a disability.

The extensive data from the Labour Force Survey conducted by the ONS showed that not only are these disadvantages compounded but they are multipliers for each other!

If you're a woman you earn X amount less over your career.

If you're disabled you earn Y amount less.

If you're a disabled woman you earn X+Y...+Z less!

It's astounding and shameful.

So when you come across it in the workplace challenge it. If you're not coming across it, ask questions to find out about it - this is especially aimed at all the white, able, middle class men in this bowl.

Yes. I’ve been told explicitly that my ethnicity and my socioeconomic background count against me by a senior figure.

It was also extremely obvious when 90% of those that suffered from covid induced performance scrutiny in 2020 were BAME (within my op unit).

It was something I genuinely thought wouldn’t exist whilst I was still in HE. The last few years have been disturbingly eye opening…

helpful

Been in London for 8 years, never had anything explicitly said against me (i am European tho, but my name is 100% foreign - eastern european). But back during uni days and the crazy summer intern and grad schemes hunt, i did realize that i had way less callbacks and invites compared to my friends with “english” sounding names. This was even when i went to a target school and one of my friends didnt. Had to send way more apps to actually get a job compared to how many they did.

100 percent what c1 said. And yes. Not blatantly to my face but it’s never not there

6 years in the UK from a European country, quite obvious I’m foreign from my accent, even the way I look one could say (though Caucasian). I haven’t felt any discrimination whatsoever in the workplace or any other aspect of my personal life thus far.

Where you’re from and what accent matters! I have an American accent and I don’t feel that it’s held me back at all. BUT, I work in a very international setting and I recognize that an American accent is seen as a “good”or largely neutral accent. I’m not white, so I think my experience would be different if I looked the same but had a strong Caribbean or Indian or other accent

likehelpful

I’m in the exact same boat. I’m South Asian American and always wonder how I’d be treated if I had my dad’s accent rather than American, especially as a woman. I’ve found in my career in London I can actually use my American accent to my advantage, but still have faced micro aggressions and disadvantages as a woman of colour.

Black + American and have received biased due to both.

Gotta keep it moving, but it hurts when I think about it.

If you were offered a role at a company where there was little to no diversity within the group you were interviewing for (not even at the level you were interviewing for, or at senior leadership level) would this be a red flag for you in terms of culture, & potential opportunities? I want to keep an open mind but this company has been around for 20 years. The people I interviewed with were great but im concerned that there’s a larger problem at play. Thoughts?
