Long term goal is PM at FAANG. Am I better off starting with a PM role at a startup, or Product Ops at big tech? Trying to weigh switching internally vs recruiting externally in a few years

Either option works. PM role at a fast growth startup will accelerate your learning and the scrappiness is highly valued by FAANGs for PM roles. Laterals from PMM or products ops is more common at some companies than others, but multiple friends have made that transition successfully

Easiest is amazon, idk about rest but it’s doable at Google.

My impression is that joining a FAANG in a tangentially related role while wanting to switch to product management is like joining big 4 as an auditor or somewhere random in advisory and wanting to switch to the strategy team. It happens for some people, but is a steep uphill battle. Switching into big 4 strategy from a smaller strategy shop, despite still being hard, is more doable. So start with PM elsewhere, unless you can use an MBA as a possible reset button.

Go to a PM role at the startup. You’ll have a much easier time lateraling to another product role later.

internal transfer at Google more specifically PM ladder is one of the toughest. I’d go to a startup and build my PM credentials.

I am still at the job posting stage and my visa is expiring on March 2021. I’ve been following-up with the lawyer and they don’t seem pressured with the timing. I just feel that I am in a tight situation considering new visa regulations from Trump’s administration & wondering if I am overreacting. If anybody is on the same boat, do you think that I should be worried & should continue to follow up frequently with the lawyer?

Hi Google - I am requesting guidance! I am prepping for my interview specifically GCA and open ended questions. I struggle to tell if the outcome should be talking through your process/steps (maybe for a question like - how would you go about determining program complexity) vs a specific solution such as create x new product, for x market by x date based on my assumptions. Is the desired outcome something I can clarify with the interviewer?
