Long term which do you all see as more lucrative consulting for big 4 (assume you ultimately would make partner) or move to tech industry? We can debate WLB separately but this is purely money

Partner isn’t what it once was. Pensions are terrible now, and the pay isn’t great compared to other career tracks available to people who could make partner. If you’re looking for money and money alone, consulting is one of the lower paying white collar gigs. You’re much better off pursuing big law, pretty much any front office finance role, or tech. With the exception of tech, the lifestyle will be worse though.

Tech. There are many more roles in tech that pay the same or more than B4 partner roles. That said, consulting is not a 1:1 match with tech, as many of those high paying tech roles require a different skill set than that in consulting. I also want to point out that it's a numbers game, since only somewhere around 5%, give or take, make it all the way to partner in consulting.

Been wondering this recently as I start prepping to try to move to tech. The biggest variable for me is the progression once you break into tech. Like say someone with 5 YOE in consulting takes a program manager job at Microsoft for 250k TC. Obviously that’s great comp, but what’s next? If they stay at Microsoft for 10 more years, what would their comp look like typically, since that’s about when that person would make partner in big 4.

I accepted a Product Manager role at Amazon for $225k TC Y1. I start next week and have been wondering the same thing. Anyone with some insights?

Mid day Partner , due to pensions. The only argument for tech is if the stocks continue climbing like they are now

Comp and WLB two sides of the same coin. Incremental increase in the commitment you give in terms of time and effort becomes exponentially more valuable (else you’re doing it wrong)

I work at a growing consulting firm in the Data Privacy space (but have mainly done IT Audit and Cybersecurity work to date). I think I would eventually want to do Privacy work in industry but want to build more experience and knowledge in the space first. I also really like the WLB I have at my current job (around 45 hr work weeks). I occasionally get reached out to by Big 4 recruiters. Am I missing out by not engaging with these recruiters? I feel like I would lose my WLB if I pursue Big 4.

How much room for negotiation is there on role level when moving to MBB as a lateral? Currently M2 at a boutique founded by ex-MBB partners. We often compete with MBB. Recruiters at each firm have steered me towards joining at Associate (M) /Consultant (BB) level which I believe is common practice for lateral moves. This would likely result in a small pay cut for me, even at A3/C3. All have suggested a 6-12 month window to Manager promotion is possible. Would appreciate some advice, thanks!
