Hi, To share my experience who are looking to exit. I am a director at KP, YOE consulting 12 years at 200K base 15% bonus:
TD / RBC AVP, 160 - 170K Base 50% bonus + stock, etc.
CPPIB D, 150 - 170K base 50% bonus
CPPIB MD, 180 - 200K base 100% bonus (yes, 100%)
Magna, MGR 175K base max
SAKS Off 5th (US), D, 190K Base 15% bonus
MLSE D, 140 - 160K,
Kainos, architect, 190K base max.
I ended up with a US based HR tech firm, Architect: 230K CAD 15% bonus stock options.
Hope this helps!
What level and skillset are you at? US discussions about compensation makes me feel really low
Are you in audit, risk advisory or tech cloud or data? It depends on your skillset and target industry. I would say that base in industry is not that great in Toronto (vs US) and you might end up in similar band, may be 20-30% higher if you are underpaid right now. However, employee equity plans make up for the rest along with annual bonus. Tip: go to a smaller firm at bigger position if higher raise is what you are looking for. Try private equity or US based start ups.
How senior are you? If you exit to VP+ in industry, 300-500k sounds reasonable all-in.
Not many as far as I know. The Canadian market just isn’t that big compared to the US, we don’t have enough large companies to have that many VP+ positions, and when they do become available internal promote is more likely.
You’ve unfortunately hit the point in your career where going for a director role feels like a step down (and from a $ perspective it is), but exiting at a higher level is unlikely.
