What is everyone else billing? I’d def start looking.

I meant leave as in you likely aren’t getting enough work under your belt to learn and would be on the cutting block if they needed to tighten budgets. Unless you’re at a small firm where this is expected in which case, amazing!

like

Honestly, unless your firm/office/practice group is in a niche space, I’d be concerned. Billables were high across the board in mainstream practice areas (again, maybe you’re in a niche that is waiting for conditions to change). I’d call a headhunter come first business day of ‘22. You’ll be a 3rd year technically and in the highly desirable “mid-level” category and can spin it as looking for growth opportunities your current firm may not be able to offer.

like

Agreed. In fairness, I have asked one lateral candidate in my career about billables (out of maybe 100 interviews I’ve conducted), and that was because they were applying from a small PI plaintiffs side shop and I needed a sense of how much actual work they were doing since BigLaw was a big jump from the work they had done. So don’t worry about that as much as thinking about what you want in a new firm that the new firm will see as a positive.

What year are you? 1st year it won't matter. That's on the firm

If you started during pandemic I wouldn’t stress. I heard this is similar for a lot of people with covid Start dates Bc partners don’t think about staffing them

Like C1 said, it depends on what everyone else is billing. Don’t use the average, ask people the same year as you or in the vicinity. It’ll only be a problem if other people are busy and you are not. When I was let go a few years ago, I had no new work all of a sudden and then I was laid off 3 weeks later

I was a first year last year and billed 1400 and nobody said anything. I was also asking for work, getting really good feedback, etc
