I’m new to freelance (since June). I’ve luckily been steadily working since then. But people reach out to me with urgent projects to put me on hold and then ghost. I can’t help but take it personally.

Just a heads up: when freelancing for Leo Burnett (Chicago) they’ll push you to go W2. I opted for W9 and had a terrible experience trying to get paid. Tons of back and forth over email with account and payroll people long after my contract ended just to help them figure out their system of Purchase Orders and Invoices. It took 2.5 months to finally get paid the last $20k they owed me.

Does anyone else struggle with being a freelancer while also being a natural leader? I always feel in freelance roles that they would prefer I just shut up (even though my ideas have been praised and implemented plenty), esp within my own dept. In a full-time role, taking charge is expected, but I'm feeling like I should just sit back and take orders vs trying to be proactive or having thoughts in a freelance role.

Has anyone successfully proposed and negotiated a move from full-time at an agency to freelance? Would love to hear about both positive and negative experiences!
