M&A is harder to do that. Have a few friends in Lit in Chicago that have been able to coast through being senior associates. Need a firm that doesn’t have an assigning partner so they don’t always know your hours and large enough where they won’t think to ask you to help all the time. Maybe you can get lucky at Kirkland and just slide under the radar. Otherwise not sure what firms that pays market you could just coast for more than a year

What is the definition of “coast” in BL? Doing little work or doing poor quality work?

like

Coast = 2,000-2,200 hours, vacations and holidays generally respected. Smaller deals where the parties are less sophisticated and things are less urgent. Not midlaw. Just a notch or two above. I think they call it the “sweet spot.”

2,000-2200 hours isn’t what I call coasting. Winston and Sidley at least used to respect vacations. If you want smaller deals that are less urgent maybe look at Croke Fairchild. Not sure about pay but know a bunch of former big law associates that went there so I assume it’s close to market. And deals generally are smaller and a little more laid back from what I hear

I will start working at a new firm as a 3rd year lateral soon. Given that many people might still be working remotely, what are some tips for introducing myself and getting to know the people in my practice group without being too forward? I am an introvert and networking has always been overwhelming for me, but I hope I will get to know at least the associates around my class year.

Articling student in Canada (8 month internship with potential hireback), currently doing transactional work. I’m WFH and having a hard time building relationships with partners. I’m friendly/chat with associates and am on great terms with one partner who gives me work often, but not much else. The firm “encourages” reaching out to partners to chat, though I’ve tried and been essentially ignored. Partners rarely have enough time to give me feedback, so I feel they don’t have time to chat.

Just say no. “Sorry, I’m at capacity”. “Sorry, I can’t get to this till next week”. Everyday I see people on here posting about how they’re going to quit with no new job, or how they’ll take a 50% paycut to go to in-house or small law (neither of which is a guaranty of WLB if you’re wondering). If you’re ready to leave anyway, why are you so bothered about what the partners will say if you just… don’t do it? Most firm’s official requirements are 2000. 2000/12 = 166 a month. (Cont’d)

Not law related - I’m looking to buy a new SUV and have been considering the Toyota Highlander Premium and the Lexus RX350l. I wanted 4x4 because I live in the snow, but have been told that AWD should be okay. I also have a 5-year old so I want something with a bit of room, but I don’t need a huge SUV. I know it’s 100% my fault but no one above me actually reviewed my work bc everyone was so busy. But then I found out the senior gave a rant about how I fucked up to another colleague. When I apologized to him, he was really salty. Since then, my heart drops every time I see his email bc I’m too scared. He is usually pretty emotional and his instructions are vague, which doesn’t help.
