Whew. This was definitely me. Ended up writing a business case for why they should make my salary in line with the industry standard and they on agreed to a 5% increase... that still had me WELL below the market rate.

You wrote a business case?? The level of effort when it’s easier to just find a new job.

Totally get it, I left my previous job and make significantly more now. Tried to negotiate with my previous company but the raises were paltry. If you know what you’re worth, go get what you’re worth

I am in the same situation. I know peers with less experience than me who make 10-15k more. On slower path to promotion than others. Clients request me by name and has given me informal offers. I definitely am undervalued.

I went through the same thing. Left the company and am now making a good salary. Use this time to get as many certifications as you can. Update your LinkedIn profile, summary and credentials. And flip that switch to indicate interest in other opportunities! DM, if you’d like help with your resume! Trust me, your time is coming!

I second C1. Yes, as women we are chronically underpaid and statistically we do not negotiate as much as men. I would be embarrassed to tell you the discrepancy between my rate and my male counterpart’s rate on a previous project. Would you feel comfortable to confront them and ask for better compensation based on the info you’re telling us? I will add that a friend recently moved into hiring for a startup. He told me that women he interviews consistently ask for less than men at the same level, and he does not correct them—he said it’s his job to save the company money. I know it sounds bad but I think it’s a useful example. Ultimately (most) companies are first looking at the bottom line, not whether they are equally compensating employees. The only way to change it is to ask for what we’re worth and refuse to accept less. Easier said than done. In my situation I brought it up with them, and they gave me some BS about that being the budget and not having room to move. Ultimately they did not show me value, and I am no longer with them.

Received a job offer that was same title and pay. After hearing more about the position, I felt that it was more senior. Asked if they were open to bringing me on as a senior, and they happily agreed….. except when I got the new offer, it was still the original salary lol. I don’t want to come off as greedy, but this feels odd. I really love the place and the people I’ve met, but this gives me doubts

So today I was promoted to senior associate after just over 5 years at the firm. But I still want to leave. So my question is this - how many months should I stay for the guilt (explained below) to fade away before I leave? Guilt - the firm allowed me to work remotely in another country as I pursue a postgraduate degree. There are better opportunities in this country and the salary I would get as a starting salary here can never be matched by the firm.

Partners won’t turn down more work despite the associate exodus. I get it. Firms are businesses. But, there will be consequences. Deadlines will be missed, things will be sloppy. PSA to associates: you’re the loser here because we are in a service profession and firms make profit off of how many hours they can squeeze out of us minus our fixed salary. Put yourself first because no one else will. To those who say it’s justified cause $$$, I say no job should require us to sacrifice our health.
