Looking for advice. I applied to a job on a whim and got it. It’s a significant bump in pay and a step up to manager. However the company, which is publicly traded, is on a downward trend. I’m hesitant to take the job because I really do like my current job and I don’t know what I’ll be stepping into (how messy it is, if it gets so bad they have layoffs, etc), but I think prospects for moving up at my current job will be very slow (like possibly years before a promotion). Help!

Take the job, learn all you can, and save as much money as possible. Because you will be first in line to be laid off. However, you'll learn a lot, and from there, you can pivot to other managerial jobs, rather than waiting years and years to get promoted.

If the company is on a downward trend and everyone knows it, retention will be more difficult. A friend of mine worked for Sears in corporate and grew her salary rapidly because they knew they couldn’t attract and needed people to stay. When she found another opportunity, her current base put her leaps above where she would have been otherwise. As someone above said, save and build an emergency fund just in case, but I’d probably take it.

like

I'd take the job. Even if it's just for a few months you'll be getting paid better and developing more valuable skills that will allow you to land something even better down the line. Sometimes we need to take some risks in life.

like

Take it. In Accounting it is hard to break into the Manager level so take what you can get.
