Looking for advice on buying/moving to burbs PA. We live in CC and have a LO. Where is a good neighborhood & and what’s a reasonable price for a nice SFH (not too big)? We prefer Radnor school district. What’s it like living in the burbs PA vs CC?

Currently live in Logan Square area, looking to buy in Lower Merion in the next year or so. I’m hoping to find something in either Ardmore or Penn Wynne in the $400k ballpark. Taxes are on the higher side, but in return you get the best school district and awesome community. Also curious to hear from someone who’s made the move from CC to the burbs

I’m on Zillow a lot just for shits and giggles, properties in that range come up but they sell quickly. Look at the sold properties to get a better idea. Also Ardmore is mostly duplexes at that price range, not sure if that’s a deal breaker for you

I grew up in Newtown Square and recently moved from DC to Center City. Assuming you’re looking at public schools, Radnor is a fine way to go. Wayne/Radnor housing (and property taxes) can be very expensive. Wayne in particular seems like The Truman Show town-idyllic in nature. I went to a private school in Bryn Mawr, I enjoyed growing up in that area as a kid. The whole place is a bit of a bubble, but a safe and even comforting one at that. Though I was desperate to try big city life after college, I now appreciate why young families move to the Main Line — the plentiful healthy grocery stores, access to prestigious private schools and above-quality public schools, countless restaurants, cafes, and shops, interesting educational and social events or clubs; close proximity to the city for sports, music, special occasions, or work.

One additional anecdote — my father grew up in Wayne and my mum in rural Maryland. My father can’t imagine living anywhere else, though he used to live in London. My mum desperately wants to return to Maryland. I think moving from the city to Main Line is an easier jump than from a rural/farmland area.

We live in Radnor in a great neighborhood. Property in Radnor tends to be pricey and taxes are high comparably, but the schools are amazing, and we have met some great people. We have a Kindergartner and a 3rd grader at Ithan elementary and LOVE it. It is pretty typical suburban experience I think, except for the excess of wealth that you see. Have to drive pretty much anywhere, but lots of green space and safe to let the kids play outside. We live on 2 cul de sacs, which is the best - kids of all ages are always out playing together (not right low because of Covid). What specific questions do you have? Feel free to DM. Not sure what your budget is, but there are a couple things for sale in our neighborhood right now. Real estate here usually moved pretty fast

$28k per year on a $1.6m home isn’t expensive?

Radnor alum here 😎 Grew up in Wayne. While I am enjoying my current life in the city I loved growing up in that area. As someone else mentioned the main line is a bit of a bubble and definitely lacks diversity...but I’d still move back if/when the time comes.

That said I have friends who have moved back and struggled to find anything a decent size and/or didn’t require renovations for under 500k.

Grew up on Main Line now live in Upper Providence/Media. Great schools, family neighborhood, awesome parks and green spaces, but lower price points on real estate compared to Main Line. Also, less of the Main Line snobbery but only 15 minutes away. Close to everything. Also check Wallingford/Swarthmore.

I grew up in Havertown and while it’s not Lower Merion or Radner, you can find homes in Ardmore and by Merion Golf Course that have Main Line feel. Great public schools and down-to-earth people.

I’ve been reading more and more in other financial forums about people refinancing into interest-only mortgages as a means of maximizing cash available for investment. Help me understand the argument for doing this? I’m starting to see it could make a lot of sense for people who 1) have a ton of equity and aren’t worried about the housing market flinching, 2) probably won’t keep their house forever, and 3) already have a high net worth. Thoughts?

Parents who have or have had a baby. How was the first year or two for you? Was it awesome, was it terrible, did it change your relationship with your partner? Did you regret it, did you want out? I've heard that having a baby can really change things between you and your partner and that a lot of marriages fall apart at that point. Just interested in stories and feedback.

Also curious if one partner kind of pressured the other into having a child/was driving force in wanting the baby.

Landed a job in NYC. As much as I want to live there and will be moving in with my partner I think the most financially savvy option is to live in Jersey city to save on the city tax. Both our salaries would definitely go up next year so moving to the city would be a huge possibility in 2022. Has anyone else started our in Jersey city first ? Is it worth it or should I just try to make it work in NYC ?
