I look for experts in their field, and with IP especially, experts in subjects close to what we do (patents in SaaS platforms in my case). Beyond that, there should be a deep desire to understand our business, our operations, where the work sits in relation to our other operations, and fluid communication. Ask lots of questions, be genuinely interested in what we do and the impact we seek to have. Be honest if you’re not the right fit, or if you have reservations about fit. You said it above - it’s a relationship. Don’t forget that.

Excellent advice, thank you! I have eight years of experience preparing and prosecuting SaaS patent applications. If you have need in this area I would appreciate the opportunity to work with you.

I’ve had luck looking for a well reasoned and thoughtful article on the subject matter then hiring the author.

I have a colleague who always shows up on our morning meetings with wet hair from where it’s clear she just got out of the shower before the call. Our manager took her aside and apparently told her that it didn’t look professional on client video meetings. I wouldn’t have even known or thought about it but someone else in our team was talking about it. It seems like a nonevent but I am curious what everyone else is thinking about experiences and expectations for dress on client video calls?
