Looking for advice on the best way to give my notice to my current firm. They're a small boutique firm and I feel like I will be blindsiding them.

Nothing to be guilty about. Any firm that’s not bracing for departures now is not paying attention. Schedule a meeting or Zoom with the partner you have the closest relationship with. Keep it brief and professional. “I wanted to let you know that I have excepted a job with [], and that my last day here will be []. I really appreciate all you have done for me, and will miss working with you every day. But this opportunity landed in my lap and I feel it is too good to pass up. Please let me know if there’s anything in particular you need me to focus on between now and my last day.” Prepare for one of three potential responses: (1 trying to talk you out of it, in which case you should not say anything negative about your current firm, but just talk about why the new job is an important step forward for you; (2) a guilt trip, in which you should employ the same strategy as you would in scenario 1; and (anger) in which case you should say “I’m sorry you feel that way“ and end the meeting a call immediately. Then send a written letter of resignation to the managing partner with a copy to human resources, and start visiting or calling your friends in the firm to give them the news personally, before they hear it on the street. No matter what response you get, finish your ongoing work, do transition memos for your files, and Wind up your relationship with the firm in a way that is above reproach. Never badmouth the firm or the people there. You are a free agent and have made a career decision. There’s nothing to be ashamed about in any of that.

Work it into a knock knock joke to lighten the mood.

Knock knock. Who’s there? Not me! I quit.

You aren’t the first person to quit to the boutique and you will not be the last, so don’t think too much into it. You can do it in-person to your practice chair and/or call. Keep it brief. Afterwards, you can email formal notice to your HR dept and cc the practice chair that you spoke with while giving notice.

Gave my notice today and it went over like a lead balloon, which only confirmed that lateraling was the right decision. The sooner you rip the bandaid off, the better you’ll feel!! You’ve got this!!

I was in your same boat 13 months ago and left a 4 attorney firm and felt guilty too but looking back I shouldn’t have. The biggest thing I can say is be prepared for them to ask what it will take to get you to stay. I was offered a raise and a defined bonus structure that could have potentially been 6x my salary. Don’t let them suck you in with promises of more money or that whatever is causing you to leave will change.

I just gave notice. I went into the office, called my supervising partner, asked to come stop by, went in and said something to the effect of “there’s no easy way to do this but I’m here to give my notice of resignation from the firm”. I also gave him a signed hard copy resignation letter. Fortunately he’s a great guy and took it 100% well and we ended up speaking for a bit. Once I left his office I sent an email with my resignation letter to the managing partner and expressed my gratitude and availability to discuss further at his convenience. Everyone else at the firm has a handled it well as well when I’ve told them. I’ve just made it clear that I would not be bad mouthing the firm or it’s attorneys in any way and that I would do whatever was needed from me over the next two weeks until I’m gone.

I’ve been going through a tough phase at work and health wise and I’d taken an Leave of absence and I’ve been working with my therapist to deal with it. Everything was going okay up until my therapist lost her cool and yelled at me and called me names for wanting to extend my leave. She spent half an hour of the session just name calling and yelling at me and I’ve been pretty disturbed since then. Whatever her reasons may be, I do believe that her behavior was completely unprofessional
