I teach and intermediate level autism classroom. we are virtual right now but I have a few tips for keeping things separate.
I would assign each student a color first of all. if you don't want to invest in colored bins from places like Lakeshore you can get cheap bins at Dollar tree and use duct tape to color them. I would have each student have a morning binder in their area, And then they could have an independent work binder that has colored folders in it so they know what to do first, next and last.
For supplies you could get clear containers and put the colored duct tape on them as well as their name. you could get crates and use zip ties and attach them to the sides of their desks as long as it wouldn't be too heavy.
when we go face-to-face I'm planning on making each student a calm down kit. I am also going to make individual sensory bins that have things that they like.
also for independent work you could actually have tabs for them and it could say pick one on the front of it so it gives them more ownership and what they work on first. so for example they would have five tabs in their binder with about five activities under each tab that would say pick one. that would give them their independent work for the week and they could pick which thing they did first under each tab. you could go through each independent binder each day and take out the work they already did. I did this with a student this past year and it worked really well for work completion because he had more ownership over what he completed first.
I forgot to mention that an organizational checklist might be useful for your students to help them stay organized. I know my autistic students tend to be very unorganized and messy and have a hard time keeping up with their supplies. Having them check their checklist also gives them more ownership and motivates them to more independent.
Since autistic students need visuals, especially for schedules, I found these neat dry erase squares on Amazon. They were 33% off. They product is mcSquares Stickies Dry-Erase sticky Notes. What a long name, right? Lol I think they could have shortened it. Another great idea I found was a storage caddy at Amazon for $15.00. They were 21% off. The name of this was Learning Resources Create-a-Space Storage Center. Also, to help keep supplies separate you could always use individual baskets or supply caddys. Not sure how much u were looking to spend, but they are $13.54 @ Wal-Mart. Really Good Stuff has great products but are pricey. Hope this helps! Good luck and stay safe!
Prodigy Math is great for so many levels and can really connect for students on the spectrum
I hope we’ll all go virtual until it’s safe for kids to be kids!!!
All good ideas. Virtually very difficult. I had TEACCH class for years with color coded individual work stations. It’s a lot of work initially but really pays off. I found it took a couple of years before I was really happy with the set up. Lots of visual markers, visual schedule for each activity and routines and more routines. I used visual markers for everything even where they lined up in and out of the classroom. Lots of resources online. Have fun and stay safe. I’m teaching remotely and I’m really worried about in person this year. I don’t see how special education teachers can stay safe?
