Looking for companies with truly flexible work culture. Where do you work with unlimited pto that doesn’t haggle you about taking off, allows you to travel, etc?

I travelled most of 2021 in South America, perfect time zone for east coast client. I didn't use any PTO until I returned to the U.S.. I just travelled by plane or car on weekends, worked during the day and made high quality internet a top priority. I never became a problem. I kept my tax base in the U.S.. I travelled to a country that welcomed remote workers. I was only limited by my visa time limit. I was transparent about it with my employer and clients. Having said that the client and employer were desperate for help. If you try to negotiate this it will be some company you've never heard of, probably not a prestigious client. Negotiate a livable salary, not top dollar. Make in win win for everyone.

It’s just so dependent on your role and your responsibilities. My manager strongly promotes taking time off, but for me to do my job, there are quarters where the deadlines are just too tight for me to take any significant time. The good thing with unlimited is I can flex it into a season or across year end…this summer I’m taking most Fridays and a week+ each month knowing the fall is going to be very busy. And then next year, my schedule will be lighter so I’ll take more time in the beginning of 2023. When it used to be tracked pto, it was hard to use up time before year end and I was always stressing trying to get it in when I didn’t really have the time for it. When the company switched to unlimited it was a relief.

Based on your post I assume you ran into “unlimited PTO” has limits.

Over the last 10 years, I have worked 4 different organizations with unlimited PTO. Every company had the same limit… my PTO had to match my team’s needs.

Unlimited PTO is actually an accounting tactic. When a company gives a benefit (like 15 days vacation), this is a liability. It makes the company worth less. When you have unlimited PTO there is no liability.

likeuplifting

Is it good for accounting? Yes. Is it still beneficial to the employee? Also yes.

It’s not a black and white perk, I personally use my time off and don’t wait to cash out when I leave, so being able to take a week off whenever I feel like it during the year, without accruing it, is worth it to me.

GitHub. Legitimate open PTO policy and managers who value it, I know plenty of people that take 6 weeks a year. And it’s a fully remote company.

Can you please dm me so we can discuss further ?

lol

Unlimited PTO also means they don’t have to pay you out for unused PTO off when you leave so beware of what that perk *actually* means.

Does Autodesk give merit yearly increases for csms apart from bonus? Also how do promotions work?

Yes, I would also like to know where I can get a job that pays me tons of money but I can just take most of the year as vaca. Oh and for the few days where I _do_ work, I want to be 100% remote so I don't ever have to see any of my colleagues. I feel as though in this competitive market for talent this should be no problem...

Fanatics is seriously about this. I’ve traveled up and down the east coast without a problem. Took meetings while in Disney world, not because I was on vacation but because they didn’t care where I was and just about the work I was doing. I can’t recommend this company enough!

I get six weeks PTO annually, plus holidays. The idea of “unlimited PTO” meaning some people can take up to six weeks is mind-blowing to me.

In my case, it's McGill University.

But I'm hoping to change to Triton Digital shortly, and I'll be getting 4 weeks vacation, plus Christmas to New Year's inclusive, plus sick days. (still not sure how much, waiting on my offer...).

I'd be bumped back up to 5 weeks after 5 years of service.

I work at CareRev. Best company I've worked for in a long time. I took pto in the first two weeks of work and I will use over 4 weeks this year. They're also about to raise our comp since new hire comp has increased. Pretty wonderful group of people.

Not once have I been hassled for taking too many days, and am actively encouraged to take holidays and wellness days. We get to go home early on fridays in the summer, and more often than not statutory holidays get extra time off (like an extra day of top of the actual day itself.)

Related topic.. if there is unlimited PTO.. many companies pay 100% for short term disability insurance. On the surface this looks like a nice benefit for employees, but the company is motivated to do this.

If you are sick 14 days (some policies are 30 days), then you get moved from PTO to disability insurance. The insurance pays 50% to % 70% of your salary….. and your company can stop paying your salary until you are well enough to work.

like

SPM1, thank you for the info, I didn’t quite get the ‘paying 100% for short term disability insurance’ part, could you explain further?

What is your role/position? Some roles can be done remotely so you could mix in WFH and PTO so you would be able to take vacations without worrying too much (just be careful about the law/company rules about this though - state-to-state for a little while may be fine but no clue about another country).

You don't necessarily need to find a company with "unlimited PTO" policy but maybe a company with a generous PTO policy (3-4 weeks yearly with a lot of days that could carry over) and more specifically, a team that is flexible/understanding.

Unlimited PTO and soon they are mandating a minimum time off requirement. We also have “take care of yourself” days off at least 2xs a month.

Anybody have good training resources/videos for people who want to learn graphic design? Very beginning, like somebody who just downloaded Illustrator.

I’ve had people reach out to me lately asking if I’d do a “quick tutorial” with them to teach them how to design. People tend to think design is simply learning how to put text on an image and just need a 1 hour session with me. lol. I’d rather send them some good resources, because I don’t have the time or energy to teach.
