Looking for genuine advice. I have a good amt of cash at hand (img below) of which I’m looking to invest ~50%, but lack enough understanding abt the mkt to go in on stocks completely. Would love to get in on real-estate (as I understand tht slightly better) but paranoid bcz of my visa status (H1B).

For cntxt, I’m 30 (IND) & all of the savings are from working in US for 5.7 yrs. Some of the unseen no’s below are - minimal stocks, RSU’s & 401k.

What is the best way to make my money work for me?

You need to read a book on index investing so you feel comfortable putting your money in low cost, index funds (whether mutual funds or ETFs, doesn’t matter). It’s really a no brainer for anyone to have a significant chunk of their money in index funds. I recommend you read the following books: the simple path to wealth, the boglehead’s guide to investing, and/or I will teach you to be rich.

These books have more financial advice than index investing, but it is also useful. After you understand index investing, the next step is understanding your time horizon (ideal is “forever”) and risk tolerance, which will in turn determine how many stocks to bonds you will own.

Cash Secured Puts on SPY and QQQ. Or very slowly DCA into the Vanguard versions with low costs (VOO and VGT).

I would not buy broad indices when markets are so inflated (Forward P/E-wise) and most retail investors are bullish right now. Better to buy dips or sell CSP.

smart

If you want to use the 'roll the wheel', given your capital, you may want to do it with a diverse set of individual stocks representing a broader index. Much better premium collected from selling CSP and CC than with indices.

Buy SPX based in index funds. Market is pretty high right now in fact all time high I think so buy on each dip to get a decent avg

Good intro video EY1. Thanks for sharing

Remember that inflation is/will hit at 3% YoY. In the past year your cash has lost >$6k in value. Not financial advice, what I would do is allocate 6 months expenses into cash, and since it’s seems you’re conservative, look into corporate bonds and bond etfs like BND and RPAR

You’re 30 though. The market rn doesn’t matter as long as you hold for 15-20+ years

like

Just buy the S&P index (SPY) it’s betting the field and you will never go wrong. Not a lot of excitement but not a lot of stocks/funds actually outperform this index

If you’re looking at an index fund look at ARKK. But definitely do something with that cash. You could also invest in bitcoin or art through masterworks. Also check out rootstock for an easier way to buy and manage real estate. You definitely have enough for a down payment

ARKK is up 110% ytd and 400% over 5 years... that’s literally unheard of. Compare VOO which is up 15% ytd and 77% over 5 years. Still good but cathie wood blows them all out of the water.

I am 30 married and my cash in hand is a lot less than yours, I just invested in a home. I’m on a work visa as well

Try Fundrise. It’s crowdsourced real estate investing and has returned pretty consistently over the past few years. It’s less liquid but also less volatile and your money works for you. Those guys do decent diligence on the assets they buy so the downside risk seems limited.
