Looking for help to negotiate offer: recruiter brought up comp expectations twice during interview process and asked if I was ok with 110-120 salary. Offer came in near the low end. Can I ask for higher (125) now that they’ve extended an offer? The role is a step down in terms of level so we’d discussed coming in closer to the top of the range. I also have a retention bonus at my current firm that I didn’t bring up as I wanted to wait until I received an offer.

You can ask. But the band may have a hard ceiling.

like

Asking won't hurt. They expect you to negotiate.

So 125 is out of the range so might be tough and bad look. Phrase is that you were targeting the upper end at 120. Mention you have a bonus at your current role of xyz amount and ask what they can do to cover it. It might be a signing bonus but that’s still better than nothing

Biglaw first year deferred from September to late January with a $10k advance. I had to incur $11,000 in credit card debt to live, & right when I started work, had a medical emergency that ended up costing me another $3,500. My paychecks have been smaller due to paying back the advance and prioritizing maxing out my 401k and HSA (my credit card debt was interest free). It was depressing working these hours to mostly just pay needs and my debt. Today I paid it all off! Woooooo! I feel so free.
