Looking for hope/motivation: Is it possible to move in house to a private equity firm with a non-traditional background? Have an MBA (not top but nationally recognized) with several years non-practice industry (risk/compliance/research) experience prior to being barred and currently at a boutique firm doing securities/private equity/Corp. looking to possibly move as 3-5 yr associate. I know anything is possible but not coming from big law and the non-traditional background make me question it.

I went straight in-house. I know more and more people who took a non traditional path. The only thing I’ve really noticed is that when you don’t come from big law the pay is definitely less.

How’s your law school? The industry is growing like wild. Marquis names may be hard but lower-mid sized firms will probably be willing to overlook background.

Thanks! My concern is the PE industry is often hung up on school ranks and prestige of former employers, although there are plenty of smaller PE/alt. investment firms that may be more forgiving.

True about the legal industry; overlap that with the PE industry and you’ve got a subset of folks who think your school and prior employers are the only predictors of success.

Top 50 when I attended but has slid since. DC area school with a decent National rep. I was thinking the same about the small to mid size PE firms. Ideally a position where I’m solely legal counsel but also have some say in investment decisions.

Do you think most tech companies look for candidates who have exact experience for the roles they're hiring for? Or do you think some are willing to take risks on candidates that they like but don't necessarily fit the bill perfectly? I haven't had success breaking out of my current function, but feel I'd be qualified to do a lot of different things if companies were just willing to take a chance on me.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I'm currently a mid-level associate in a Big Law firm and am about to finish a 6-month secondment with a large international corporation. I'm also looking for in-house positions. Should I add my secondment experience to my resume/LinkedIn profile? I've never seen anyone do this but it seems like something that would be appealing to in-house employers. Just wondering about the best way to highlight this experience for in-house positions.

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

New manager said last week he wants to replace me with someone less experienced and presumably cheaper. Of course being very “nice”, allowing me to take my time looking for external opportunities. My performance has always been exceed expectations. He recently became my manager. Today, he reassigned one of my projects without discussing with me. Was so annoyed. Luckily I received an offer last week from a new company that values my experience. After what happened today, I just wanted to vent.
