Why not wait a few years, enjoying DINK? I didn’t have kids until my mid 30s, best decision. I think I would’ve resented it if it happened sooner.
Test your fertility now. AMH and FSH so you know where you stand. You may be surprised at the result. I’d suggest freezing your eggs. I wish I did that. Trying now at 41 and it’s almost impossible
Piling onto this. Go to a fertility doctor to get your stats so you know where you stand. There are no guarantees on this process at any age. It’s better to have the information than to not. It’s an easy appointment and will really help you make decisions and start asking different kinds of questions.
Reach out to women in your firm and get their insight on the workload. I have a rockstar husband who is the primary caregiver but not everyone has a spouse willing to do the “mom” jobs. I also work with women who thought they would continue traveling once babies came but are now wanting to be closer to home. If you can live frugally now and save up some of your income, you will be in a better place later if you change your mind on working a traveling job.
Save up some money and contribute toward your HSA if you have one. Saved me a lot of stress when those bills came in.
If you’re more than a year out from feeling ready, I would say the most valuable thing is to start saving up! Childcare is more expensive than a lot of people realize, and there are many unpredictable situations that could result in higher bills or reduced income for a while, so having a nest egg will give you peace of mind and flexibility.
Closer in, it’s suggested you start taking prenatal vitamins a bit before trying to conceive, and it’s helpful to have a good OB/gyn picked out.
Talk to any doctors you have that prescribe you medication so you know if you can keep taking them or need to switch once you decide to start trying. Also your OB obviously.
