Looking for intel on mat leave coverage offered across the industry…

At Sid Lee there is a reduced workload the first month back from your leave - 4 days a week required for billable hours submitted vs 5 days but that’s it - no top up coverage.

It’s a shame that an industry that jumps on every progressive cause when it’s free but won’t give women a top up when they are producing actual humans. What a joke.

I’d like to see agencies take a stand on this issue. Women are likely 70% of the marketing and advertising industry!

I couldn’t agree more. I was also pretty surprised this thread didn’t already exist on Fishbowl but glad we are all disclosing what we know - information is power in both advocacy and negotiation.

I can only speak to Pat leave @ the kitchen: 17 weeks fully topped up, flexible return to work (first week back 3 days worked, 4 days next week, etc. over course of first month back), was really generous

That’s great, thank you for sharing!

GUT offers 70% top up of your salary for 17 weeks.

like

Thank you for sharing!

There are agencies out there that do offer a top up, although not sure of the % or duration. I’ve heard Rethink, Innocean, DonerNorth and a couple others do.

like

Rethink you have 2 options:
1 - 3 month EI top up to 100%
2 - 2 months fully paid before/after EI

like

Interesting, thank you for sharing!

We were doing 12 or 18 weeks at 100% but i think it may have changed recently.

like

Appreciate the info, thank you!

No top up at FCB. You sort of ease back into work but are working 5 days a week upon return.

Brutal but thank you for sharing.

like

No top up at Zulu

That’s disappointing. Thank you for sharing.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

Obligatory financial info post. 1) size of firm, 2) billable requirements, 3) salary, 4) bonus, 5) quality of life, 6) debt, and and 7) family/married/single. Go!

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

Currently, in accenture. I have had very bad billable hours and not much achievement this fiscal year. I am worried of getting fired, so i applied for another job. Got offered may be 5% above my current pay with 5k bonus, but in lower level at Deloitte. I think working lower level will give me more opportunities to learn as i think i have lot to learn. I made decision based on my gut and accepted the offer. I have not talked to anyone on accenture side yet. What you think?

I am a mid level and have received an offer from a regional big law firm in a non-market paying location. I believe the firm would be a great fit and the location is where I want to be. The biggest issue is money. I’d be lateraling from full cravath in a major market and the initial offer I received is a bit off that (read: 50% salary reduction). While the market is cheaper in some respects, housing is not. How far can I expect this firm to go to in terms of compensation? Any negotiation tips?

Hi everyone, I have a quick question that’s kind of silly. I work at a pretty small company leading marketing.
