I like having the information in a PowerPoint that I give to families, but I also have some hands-on activities that allow children and families to work together. I try to quickly go through the most important basic info, then I provide some hands-on activities that everyone can participate in and allow for more organic discussions. Here are some of the things I’ve used:
1. Hopes and dreams mural: I lay out a long sheet of paper and marker/colored pencils. I have the question, “What are your greatest hopes for kindergarten?” As families and children draw and talk about it, I address some of the ways we work on those skills
2. I pick an activity that can easily be replicated at home, but that I would also use in the classroom. Feel free to DM me for ideas. I have a packet from our previous curriculum plus some ideas of my own. This adds value to families by teaching them a new skill and ways to help their child learn at home.
3. Karen Mapp has lots of great videos on family engagement and she specifically talks about open houses in one of them if you’re looking for inspiration!
Thank you
I always do a PowerPoint when they are there and make sure to print it out and the parents can take a copy. I also send it home to the parents who cannot attend:)
Can you do QR codes for different ipen house stations? That was parents can go through at their own pace!
Put your presentation in an old familiar song!!!They'll love it!!!!
There is a thread on sped ahead on Facebook where teachers are talking about this very subject
