Looking for opinions on splitting travel costs! My brother, sister-in-law, and I all split a single hotel room (2 double beds) on a recent trip. Should I end up paying 33% or 50% of the hotel room?

I just wanted to agree with op here sharing a room can be fun if it’s just for a night or two especially if you get along, chat or watch tv together or something. So how much was the room? If it was fairly cheap, I’d probably just cover the whole thing. If it was pricy, I’d probably ask for 50%. The 33% seems very petty.

like

Especially since it sounds like you shared a room to save money (which is a fine reason), it’s probably ok to ask an open ended question like “hey how should we split the hotel?”. If they offer to cover 66%, great. I would not push the issue if they propose 50-50. Better yet, if this is a road trip with other costs there’s probably more similar situations (gas, maybe a rental car or some cabs, etc). Set up a Splitwise and figure it out in aggregate. Disclaimer: I’m not good at these things myself and was brought up with “I pay this time, with the tacit understanding that it’s on them to remember next time”. But I’ve also been a student, so can relate to the conundrum.

50%. If they were traveling by themselves they would book one room and share one bed. If you were traveling by yourself you would book one room and sleep in one bed. So if you book one room with 2 beds you should split the cost 50/50.

like

Just pay 50% and move on. Life's too short to fuss over these things, especially with family.

likesmart

Since OP has their own bed whereas the couple is sharing, I would just go 50-50.

like

33%, singles shouldn’t bear a disproportionate impact just because they’re single.

The IRS disagrees

Why are you sleeping in the same room as your married brother and his wife?

likefunny

I don’t think it’s a big deal. If they’re all comfortable with it and want to save money, let them be. Sheesh. Lots of judgmental a-holes here.

Just pay the whole thing. Next time their turn.

Depends if sister-in-law has a sibling for OP 😉

33% for sure. Although personally I’d rather get a separate room :)

I Agee with this.

like

I would say 50% bc you get the benefit of the full bed. And since there’s 2, well you pay half.

Wow this got way more reaction than I expected 😂 I ended up splitting the shared night 50/50 for simplicity’s sake, but I do think if it were friends I would’ve split it in thirds without question. We split a room because it was logistically convenient - I was just staying the one night and we all got dinner/drinks that night then brunch the next day (they stayed 2 more days). Plus they don’t have status and I do, so better chance for them to end up in a nicer room for the rest of their stay. Also, because we’re adults and can all sleep in the same room without it being weird…? Everyone who asked about this…do you really think married couples do stuff every night? Or that it’s such an imposition not to?

like

33%. I'm married and that's what I have done for single friends and single siblings.

like

50%, he’s family. Don’t need to be cheap and nickel & dime everything.

like

Say that then, don’t automatically call people cheap

like

Get a separate room for sure.

like

33% not even a question asked

like

50%, also why don’t you get your room

likesmart

I mean when I’ve split a hotel room with 2 other friends we always did 1/3 obviously so I’d just assume that

like

May be it’s me. If it was my brother and sister in law - I pay and forget it. If they send something I will take it and move on. It’s family and the last thing I want is few $ to be a case of heart burn.

50%. You’re paying for 2 beds as a group, not three.
