Looking for some advice; I've been a paralegal for about 5 years now, and the past year or so has been hard. One firm closed, which dropped me in another firm which was never good for me, and then into another with a culture that was really unhealthy to me. My resume shows a few short stays at firms, and now I'm looking at moving after six months due to issues that turned over the entire paralegal team so far except for me. How do I show employers I'm a dedicated worker after a difficult year?

I’ll be perfectly honest with you, and not everyone will agree with this, but if those firms were less than 3 months, I’d leave them off. That will get your foot in the door for interview. When the gap is questioned, you took a few temporary roles before deciding to move on to a more permanent role, which is why you applied at x company (the one in the interview).

Unfortunately, I’ve had to deal with similar due to my attorney passing and the firms after being poor fits because I took them out of desperation. I had to change my resume to get where I am now.

I also agree with this approach as well!

You can explain just that. Law firms vary widely and it’s hard to know exactly what you’re getting into until you’re in it. Just come up with a clear and concise reason as to why you left each place. Don’t go into much detail and try to remain as positive as possible when discussing why you left each firm. Most of the time it doesn’t matter a ton anyways. Experience is more important.

The lack of interviews may not be entirely on you. The job market is extremely tight right now. I have over 11 yoe in commercial real estate, and it still took me almost an entire year to find another job. There are some places that I applied to and never heard back from or did and interview and then a month later was told the position was on hold.
But I do think that working with recruiters will help. They can at least help get you in the door where just resume may not.

I’ve been in the game for 30 years…some years better than others…any firm worth your time will invite conversation re: short stints and most likely understand your explanation. Don’t spend too much time worrying in this regard…it’s another stepping stone to get you where you’ll want to be. 🙏🏻

I’ve had radio silence from a small investment bank for about a week now. I’ve completed several rounds of interviews, but last Thursday the firm reposted the job I’ve been interviewing for. On Friday the headhunter said that they’re not sourcing new candidates and it’s probably just LinkedIn automatically refreshing the listing. She said they had a busy week last week but will make a final decision this week - is the delay and radio silence a bad sign or is this typical for experienced hiring?

They have added on responsibilities and I have continuously expressed to my direct manager how I feel.

I’m a junior attorney, and my goal is to work in-house for a professional sports team (preferably an NBA, MLB or NFL team) or a record label, but of course these positions are highly-coveted. I started down the traditional path of working in biglaw (NYC) to receive the necessary training and experience while also trying to build relationships. However, biglaw really isn’t for me, and I’m exploring regional firms in Boston. Is it still possible to break into the sports/ent. industry? Any advice?

For those of you who have been formally given the title of “senior paralegal” what are the qualifications for that title at your firm? Does your firm do promotions from paralegal to senior paralegal? At my firm we are all simply just “paralegal” (we all fully handle our own dockets, no assistants) and I would like to help develop a concrete career track for paralegal to senior paralegal.
