Congrats on snagging 2 great roles!!! 🎉
I know ppl are saying the obvious choice is Amazon, but if you’re still considering then here’s some food for though:
- what is your 5 and 10 year plan (for life, not just career)? Which role aligns with that better. Which puts you in the location, or skillset, or industry, or opportunities, or finances you really want?
- which team do you genuinely like better? Can you gage the work culture between the two teams and companies?
- which do you like better in terms of the actual work you’ll be doing?
- what’s your top 3 most important things to you in any job you have? Which has them the most? And why is the fintech job “cooler” actually define that and see how it fits in your top 3 list. Or top 5 if the decision is really hard
It’s about being happy, do and go where you will have less stress and more fun times. In the end life is too short to chase money and end up working long hours and not much time for friends, family and fun
Amazon for the safe option but if you think the fintech has growth potential then might be worth the risk (assuming you get decent equity at the fintech)
Amazon is supposed to have a horrible culture, so personally I’d lean toward Fintech. Money and ambition aside, you want to be happy at work.
Amazon also incentivizes you to stay 4 years with RSUs. But the average tenure is much shorter.
Pursue what you love.
Don’t go with Amazon. If you already got the sense that all they care about is how hard you work, it won’t be much different once you’re in the trenches. It’s clear their reputation precedes them when it comes to balance and you don’t want to move, don’t. Seattle and NYC are wildly different (both lovely!).
Take the risk. Start a new adventure. It’s very likely you’ll have a new group of friends very shortly after your move.
Dude. No contest. take the cooler role in the city you love.
Amazon for career reasons
Amazon
U answered yourself. Your love towards fintech and your close ones should make it easy for you.
Amazon
Go for something that excites you. You can’t buy excitement.
What role / group are you in at Amazon ? If it’s PMT in a internal org, it’s not worth it
Yeah. I mean - you can always move around in Amazon quite easily tbh. But non tech PM is a commercial role and the “real” PMs (defined as the ones who work everyday with engineers) are the Tech ones. It will take you about 18 months to move to a tech PM role internally. If the fintech is a engineering heavy PM role that might make more sense. In product Mgmt. , if you aren’t passionate about the product / team you shouldn’t be signing up for the role
as someone that worked at Amazon and left to join a FinTech - I can tell you I have never been happier. I did take a cut in pay as well but I was able to adjust my budget accordingly.
Amazon has head quarters all over. I would negotiate remote work or transfer to the NY office.
