In USA, to be in development you need to know the finance side. You can leverage the fact that you have construction experience , but you need to know basics of financial modeling and understand numbers. If you join construction department in a real estate company you are going to most probably restricted on the construction side. I also have my education background in civil engineering but I got a role in acquisition and development.

Development Analyst, Development Manager, Acquisition and Development Analyst

Thanks for the info. My understanding based on researching these types of roles is that they typically require some sort of investment experience. Is that not always the case or can I promote my knowledge of construction due diligence / costs to balance out a lack of financial modeling knowledge?

You’re both correct. Folks with architecture, law and engineering degrees wind up entering at the project manager level. Capital markets experience and knowledge will get you noticed. That said, having actual costing/estimating and boots on the ground type of execution experience and mastery are invaluable for family office and value add oriented developer or investor. I would recommend the Excel course from REFM (real estate financial modeling) and the ARGUS class taught by Josh Kahr (Columbia RE professor)

REFM I believe is from a disciple of noted RE economist Peter Linneman at Wharton.
